I was wondering if any of you had any comments on the context which the JOGL project finds itself in. With Apples’ position regarding Java on the iPhone, Steve Jobs talking of an OpenCL paradigm, the rewrite of the Java plug in and the appearance of Chrome it seems a difficult task to manoeuvre JOGL to ensure a viable niche in the future development space. Perhaps someone knows what Ken Russell’s plan is?
For my money Sun should really back JOGL with the new plugin and thereby provide truly useful 3D environment for web designers. I am a Flash programmer by trade and almost all Flash Actionscript professionals have tinkered with (pseudo) 3D effects hacked together in Flash and then promptly given up after they have no more hair to pull out. The desire is there all Sun has to to is package the development experience for them - and behind the scenes continue to sneak JOGL onto as many platforms as possible as part of the the JRE.
