Fun little game made in a weekend

Well it was a good friend’s birthday and I couldnt find any good presents to buy so I decided to make a game dedicated to him.

Unfortunately, there were only 2 days til his birthday, so I had to rush it. Its a fun little game, inspired by Crimson Land (you may have heard of this)… Basically, you move around using WSAD, and you can rotate 360 degrees with the mouse. Aim the mouse cursor and shoot the baddies!

Note: you can’t win, its impossible the survive forever. THe more u kill, the more baddies get spawned. It’s addictive, try and beat your highscore.

I love hacking together games in short times

Try it

Download it here!

Please tell me what you think…

Hmm… one concern. Executable! There’s no way I’m going to download an EXE, especially from a noobie user with only 13 posts. Post a Web Start version and I’ll try it.

And if the web start version is signed by the noobie you still execute it?

Most likely, yes. But an EXE can be so much more dangerous over a signed web start.

How?

A signed Web Start app can erase your entire harddrive, upload all of your files to some hacker, install a virus or other malware… basically it can do everything an ordinary EXE can do.

If it wasn’t self-signed then at least you might have a slightly better chance of tracking down those that are responsible… but if it is self-signed then you basically are trusting the person and you don’t have anybody to vouche for them so it’s all up to you to take the risks.

ofcourse a signed applet may also download and execute any exe file ;).

you are really offensive against him

Well I guess your right.

:’(

It is only a self-extracting RAR…

It is only a self-extracting RAR…

The difference to a compressed jar should be pretty small. Hmyea… a jar is 0.89% bigger (thats 67kb).

Well, there are two files back.jpg and back.png, which are the same image with different dates and the png is 376kb in size. The first mp3 sounds like it was converted from some lossy low bitrate whatever-format to mp3… you could have saved quite a lot of space there. The second one sounds way better (quality wise), but its sorta hard to tell if that one was created in the same way (there arent enough hi-hats ;)).

If you use ogg instead of mp3 (ogg sounds better anyways… especially at low bitrates) you wont need fmod anymore. And well, it would be xplatform, too.

(I was too scared of running the exe/game… in case anyone is wondering… you can rightclick->extract it with pretty much any zip program [used 7zip]. Your posts indicate that you’re a sorta trustworthy person tho.)

and newbe isnt really offensive. Its new+be and well… he is pretty new here, isnt he? Its all about context

sorry, my skill in english are sometimes too limited :-(, it is just because that saying to someone “you’re a newbe…/you are a noob” doesn’t sounds good for me (in french it is more used to say to someone that he have limited skill in something related to computer, also it is a prohibited word in most game server) but I turst you that it isn’t offensive.

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noob

My french is surprisingly bad

So… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbie

Well, its bout the context (as I said). If you spawn rape someone 50:-12 and call him “newbie” at the end of the match, you’re clearly making fun of him.

I didn’t intend that to be an insult. I just meant he’s new to the forums. I’ve been on other forums where a guy with only one post posted a link to a site and it turned to be a warez site with many pop-ups which in-turn crashed my PC. I’m just trying to protect my computer here. I’m sorry if it offended you, phi6 - it was not intended.

I gave your game a go. It’s pretty weird. The instructions are more than half off the screen so I can’t see them.

Thanks for your comments, onyx, will definitely learn for next time!

I can assure you all my files are completely trustworthy, but I can see why people would be cautious. It’s probably why people haven’t been trying my games, and I must admit I’ve been foolish not to realise why… :’( Will definitely just RAR it next time, or better still… get it onto WebStart

Sorry, is it your resolution? the width is fixed at 1000, bad design i know.

Yeah, my resolution is set at 800x600 and can’t go any higher. I have problems at 1024x768 where the screen is all scrambled together. It’s my old monitor.
