I see that as a weight (not sure if that’s the appropiate term). It’s standard in SMF, and it’s so boring compared the the duke we have in the logo. :
YES! The little robot/duke/ghost would look good. You could use the red version for unread and the blue version for read, or something like that. ;D

EDIT: Did you try the normal image for unread, and a gray scale version of the image for read. That’s kind of what it looks like the current image does.
That doesn’t look to bad.
You have no empathy for the blind with a fifth sense.
Size is fine, but I don’t recommend decreased opacity on the “has new posts” icon, might work confusing.

But, ok, I lied still. The size is “fine”, but I would personally like to see 5-10% larger icon.
