It was already possible to create 3D first person shooter with Shockwave 10 years ago and in Java in 1997 like this one:
Java and OpenGL are already used in some commercial video games like Wakfu. Flash comes a bit late in this area. I don’t wait for anything from Adobe, Java already does the job quickly and reliably
JMonkeyPlatform is promising too.
inded, as well as with severals other plugins that was working better than both java & shockwave… the big difference here is that flash is the most used plugin and each new version of its plugin is upgraded worldwide in few monthes ( unfortunatly not the same for java
)
so no doubt that if flash include proper 3D it will be usable fastly (at least for simple application) only after few monthes (and even after a cupple of weeks it will become more “compatible/reliable” to use than webgl and such because more client-side user will have it installed than any other existing 3d solution)
Don’t think Java is either reliable or particularly quick for web based 3D tbh. Certainly not well adopted or supported.
Half decent flash 3D will be far more widely used, even if probably a lot more limited.
3d does seem like the logical area for Flash to move into considering how it looks like html5 is now capable of most things that were only doable in Flash before.
It’ll be a long time (if ever) that WebGL catches on due to Microsofts conflict of interest with OpenGL. So looks like Flash could do really well in this area.
As for Java, Oracle have done some nice changes for the client side stuff but sadly its not enough and unlikely to be anytime soon. They’ve wasted alot their clientside resources into JavaFX which has been a rather big disappointment and caused them to neglect core Java.
Microsoft will never adopt WebGL except if this technology has a huge success. However, WebGL has no chance to succeed without a proper MSIE support.
Giving up JOGL is not what I would call a nice change.
Jake 2 works reliably as far as I now.
yeh, was more referring to things like java plugin2, faster startup time on applets, fixes for tons of the hanging issues that had plagued applets for years and custom loading screens for jws.
But yeh there has been some poor decisions, like that relating to JOGL, the magic certificate was a great move but too bad they dropped the ball on that.
I like that it’s become Google’s responsibility to bring IE up to the standards. They had a similar effort to write a WebGL implementation on DirectX so they wouldn’t need to wait for IE’s poor drivers. Unfortunately, this just makes it more cost effective for Microsoft to continue to fail since someone else will just fix their work for free (to them).
Adobe Max 2010 have started in LA, they already show impressive 3D games, I find that flash & action script sucks but… it seems to become the way to go even for 3d games, also flash10 is now supported in several mobile phone
some video :
Flash might be the way to go for web games… they also seem to be supporting every phone os(that allows it) in the future.
Though looking at java stats for this month, 70% are using java 6. I bet minecraft is helping there
Flash is already the default for web games. Go to any game portal, it’s all Flash. I’ve even seen game portals that claim to be for Java and Javascript games but really just use Flash.

Sorry I meant 3d web games.

That surely beats the Javas racing car version (http://www.java-gaming.org/index.php/topic,22941.msg189924.html)
Oh and they doing controller support…
Would be great to make an online 3D game using java as a community project.
