It might just be me, but there is a great icon indication which forum category has new posts that I have not read, but when I navigate to that category, there is no indication which posts I have read and which I have not. It would be nice if the unread ones were different somehow, maybe bold?
Just click [Show unread posts since last visit.] in the header
I have tried that, but it is harder to sift through (not following every category, yet)
That link gives me a generic “in box”, to compare to email.
Since the system is already sorting my new “mail” into folders for me, it would be nice, if in those folders, it kept some indication of which was new.
That way I wouldn’t have to read “subject” and “from” on everything to determine which was “spam” (it’s not really spam, just continuing the analogy).
It’s just a suggestion 
You want “Recent Unread Topics” to show which topics you have read before?
If you click on the actual topic instead of clicking on the “new” icon, that topic will show as a ‘visited’ link so next time you’ll know you’ve read it.

But when you go into that category, you no longer have any indication of which topics you have read.
My suggestion was to have some indication as to which topic had new posts.
Maybe bold the subject, maybe alter the “Last post” icon

to be red in color as well.
Or add an extra first column with the icons from above, serving the same purpose, only for the topic instead of the category.
Getting super fancy, that last post icon would link to the beginning of the posts that you have not yet read in that topic. ie- if you have not read the last 10 posts in the topic, it would link to the oldest of those 10 rather than to the newest one.
I could mock up some screenshots if it still isn’t clear what my suggestion is.

I noticed it, but it is on most of the discussion threads even though I have clicked “Mark as read” in the category. Would probably be easier to notice/correlate if it came before the subject.
It is definitely not mirroring the functionality of the icons one level up. As I can enter categories that say there are no new posts, but most of the topics have the new icon.
But then I do get an error message whenever I click on “Mark as read”, so maybe it is erroring out part way through the process. ie: it resets category level flag, but not thread level.
It looks like I am going to have to manually visit every thread to clear the “new” icon

Logging out/in gets me maybe one successful mark as read, usually not, though.
