I realize cloud computing is the in thing right now, but storing games in the cloud would be a real problem for people like me who have no-carrier devices and rely on local wireless networks to connect – I wouldn’t be happy with a game I could only play at home or in the area of a network.
Bug report (sorry):
I ran into a weird issue, I had just saved and exit to the main menu and when I then picked continue game the screen look really strange.
hehehe, funny! that could get a spot in many modern art museums.
Yeah, sorry, I’ve been fooling around with asset manager, it is a loss of openGL context since some of my assets are still loaded static… Please close game entirely and reopen, I’ll try to get it fixed in the next days.
Thought I’d share my thoughts about the game, here on JGO, from what I’ve experienced so far!
It’s a brilliant game and it feels just the way you’d want it to feel. The controls and buttons are easy to use and placed out conveniently on the screen.
The game isn’t too easy, nor is it too difficult (as long as you play it somewhat safe). The fighting mechanics work well. The conversations with the NPCs are hilarious and the questing is fun!
Keep up the good work! It’s already a great game and it can only get better
Edit: I noticed a minor bug, which I should probably report on your forum. Bah… Due to laziness I’ll report it here If you already have somebody hired to be in your party, when you talk to the seed salesman for the quest, he too can follow you creating a party of three. If however, you first speak to the seed salesman for the quest and get him following you, you are unable to hire somebody else. Oh, well… Still a great game!
When you say “play it somewhat safe”, how safe do you play?
I am asking because I feel that my skill progression is a bit slow. It feels like I go back and forth from the town and Lannegar mine and on every new trip I only make it slightly further into the mine.
I play as a rogue sneaking around taking people out one by one from behind.
It does indeed take a while to level up, but IMHO that’s a good thing. It’s much more rewarding leveling up if you’ve actually had to work for it!
As for getting through the mine, I would recommend searching for someone that sells you better equipment. It gets a whole lot easier getting through the mine with better equipment!
I think it is Karma. Hovercraft is too difficult!!! ;D
Now seriously, Skills are unbalanced. Looking at my metrics I’ve found that depending on skill choices, some players struggle too much. For instance, for a low-level warrior, Resilience and Whirlwind make the game much easier. A rogue with Stab is sooo much better. And in later levels, new skills are needed, to incorporate new combat mechanics and make the game more interesting in the long term.
In sum, current skills are just a “sketch”. The good news is, I already have the skills designed and drawn in my board…
As soon as I finish the content for 0.5, I’ll begin working on the new, expanded, revamped, more numerous, and better-looking skills/spells. And yes, enemies will use them on you too. I will focus all the development in that direction until I’m satisfied with it.
Any update to skills will include a refund of skill points, so current testers can re-allocate all their skill points.
I am playing as a warrior, low level (because I started from scratch again), and it is not exactly hard, but it’s difficult to go far before I have to run back to the tavern for some well earned sleep.
Looking forward to that. I don’t mind it being hard, it’s the repetitiveness of slowly gaining enough money to buy gear to progress further that I am not fond of.
That is cool, a very good idea.
What a coincidence, that’s where I fix my bugs as well; in theory.

Actually, that one wasn’t fixed in practice until .773 8)

Maybe you should try doing other quests in Lannegar instead of doing more goblin mines… it is a big world. Eventually there’s a quest to wipe them out (partially) but I suggest you talk to everyone in the first town, quests give a lot of XP, gold and sometimes items. Remember the game is not linear! And goblins can be hard to handle when they gang up around you.
Edit:

Thanks, will fix!
Spotted a weird bug today. When I walk up-and-left or up-and-right, and only when I am actually in motion, there’s a a black dot flickering above the head of my avatar (at a distance of about the same height as the avatar).
In other news; I let go of my OCD and stopped exploring the game in my I-am-doing-one-area-at-a-time sort of strategy and just went off. That was a lot more interesting and I must say it’s a very impressive game you’ve got here. I played it on my way to work today and for the first time in my life I wished my commute was longer so that I could have played more
Yeah… sorry for that ugly thing, already fixed for next build, thanks. I have entirely revamped/remastered all the sprites for next build. They’ll now be in higher resolution and I’ve added more armor and shield types as well. Properly-looking chainmail, wizard robes, and the Varannari will have their own look too, no longer “green-dressed people”.
I am glad to hear you have fun!
However, I should take into account it is very “natural” for people to try to clean out the mines first, and get frustrated over it. Looking at analytics, I have several testers that died repeteadly in the mines, then gave up. I’ll include more “hooks” to drag the player to other areas early on. By the way, there’s a tomb in lannegar valley, appropiate for level 3-5, with a nice quest there too. Maybe the lannegar priest sent you there already.
EDIT: hey, 100 points in the leaderboard! nice round number!
Is there a backstory as to how the “dungeon-smell-like-roses-tales-of-old” guy’s friend who entered the dungeon and disappeared died? Considering there’s a huge pile of rubble blocking the entrance to the room where he died… Is it possible he went in, the rubble came down blocking the path behind him, giving the two skeletons and zombies a great amount of time to brutally murder and destroy him?
Edit: What I’m asking then is: are there backstories to that kind of events that have already taken place in the world?
Sometimes, I have backstories/extra info about things that have happened, or why they happened. In most cases, actually, because I tend to be veeery long-winded when I write, and I end up cutting off a lot of stuff from the dialogues and the journal.
Eventually, I will put together and in order all that stuff and put it in “the Library” section, under “Lore”. for instance, you recover Hendrick’s journal in that quest, and most of it is not directly related to the game, so I felt it was too confusing to add it fully. In The Library I may add some interesting entries… and yes, he was trapped, and as new undead are always surging in Tolassian tombs, he couldn’t survive for long.
First one is some chests (the one in the example below is from the Bandit camp just west of the New Garand farmlands) seems to have incorrect bounds. This means you can walk into them.
Second one is really perculiar and you’re going to think I am making this up.
I was rescued Constanze from the Bandits in the cave just outside of Kingsbridge, but I died on the way back. So I restarted from the Inn and this time I walked all the way to Constanze’s cell without running into any Bandits, not NPCs appeared. And Constanze wasn’t in her cell. I then explored the caves a bit to see if I could find any NPCs and I managed to spot one and when he attacked me he walked backwards! Strangest thing ever, he sort of moon-walked over to me and attacked me whilst still facing the other way. Behavior was reproducible every time I restarted the game. It stopped happening after I had another sleep at the Inn, and then I was able to rescue Constanze again.
actually, I think I know what happened. If his facing was locked, then that gives me a big clue.
I have set a limit of facing updates per second for NPCs, to avoid them to “jerk” constantly to one side and to another when they move in diagonal. If upon reload, the NPC never changed facing, it is because the “game clock” was rolled back to your last inn-sleep, but this spawned guy is from the level that SHOULD have been ditched when you died. So he is in the future, which means they won’t check their facing again until game clock catches back. Probably the whole problem is that the areas are not being respawned when you reloaded the game, I’ll look into this.
I think it is the same bug JaredBGreat reported about lannegar valley not spawning after death, except for the moonwalk. Fixing it monday, as I am out for the weekend.
