Evolution

I saw people questioning about the evolution about JOGL. Guys charging for this should have a look at: http://code.google.com/intl/zh-CN/apis/o3d/

Things are natural, dinosaur will become fossil and mammal will control the world. Did dinosaur know its fate?

…failed to make the obvious point that O3D’s arrival means JOGL is about to get hit by an asteroid.

Not anytime soon.

I haven’t looked at any OpenGL stuff so can something explain…, what does O3D have that JOGL hasn’t? and what is JOGL missing compared to, say LWJGL?

Well, you can be quite sure that Google will actually back this project.

Sensationalist topics ;D

It is still too early to see which tech is better. My opinion is both JOGL and o3D are at their early stage. But apparently right now google is rising and java is …

From the JOGL we see sun’s enthusiasm in share their limited budget with 3D development. But time asteroid can never wait.

Javascript?

I think it might be a little bit too much but look back at the evolution of Java I see many regrets just as what I see in many vanished softwares:

if sun’s awt could have a better effect and swing have better performance, jave could had occupied the desktop;
even though the awt lost the game, if sun put more investment into marketplace, the applet may had occupied the web, so no place for the flash and other plugins any more;
if sun could recruit more experienced 3D developers developing JAVA 3D, it would not die as a half-hatched egg;
if Ken Russell had more resources he may had worked out a sophisticated JOGL platform so as to make other competitors giving out their minds of putting their hands in.
and if… There shouldn’t be so many if. Only fact that dinosaurs is here for people to recall.

heu… did you just discover that some plugin to make 3D on the web exists ?? they are other existing one that are older and better than O3D, what make you so entousiast is just the word “Google”…

I agree with this point and it is too bad… Sun has missed something huge technologicaly and comercially…

I still wonder how well a game can run using O3D, collisions, physics, etc. It might be ok on chrome, but I.E might not be so good in that area.
Developers will only build with it if the masses have that plugin. Maybe if Chrome adds it as part of the browser it might start its popularity…
But if Google wants this out, I’m sure they can easy do it, since they have the money to spend.

I agree too, Sun missed the boat big time by ignoring applets for too long, but i reckon theres still a small opening for applets to make a come back.

if enough improvements are made to applets and Java 7 adds native support for things like ogg video (or some other open video format), they could possibly still make a come back, since they still have a relatively large install base, massive developer pool, cross platform technology and java is open source. Wikipedia for example are using Java applets for playing video due to the platform being open and being able to use an open video format example.

Flash and Javascript are still very weak when it comes to many cpu intense and 3d applications, other RIA platforms like Air and Silverlight still need to mature and don’t have the large install bases or mature tech like Java does but they are catching up fast.

Suns done some great work with the consumer jre 6 stuff but will it be enough? i reckon alot will depend on how quickly Java 7 comes out and how much Sun(Orcale?) does to improve the consumer features of the jre.

When will the 7 come out? Waiting for the contract with Oracle?

I agree with kapta. Java needs some killer app to do the promotion. Javagame community had done some work, such the WWJ and sample code on NEHE. But I am having a feeling it is academic or technical. it can hardly push java into marketplace.

Is anybody here working on such “Killer Java game”? Or maybe we can organize one dev group to do an attractive java 3d game. I suppose the visitors of this forum are the all working on JOGL.

Any idea?

This is prolly not a constructive post. Here’s how I’m looking at it(I’m a noober so don’t get too mad at me):

  1. I don’t see what it matter’s whether or not JOGL is discontinued or not. It’s easy to implement, cross-platform, and excellent for what it does. Course it could be better, but so can everything else. So if JoGL should die before I wake, I thank it’s creators for the applications it let’s us make.

  2. O3D does look cool, and could be promising.

  3. I feel as if it’s not a lack of an amazing java3D or JoGL game project, I’ve seen some really impressive ones from posters on this board! Java’s gaming libraries may not be as powerful as the hard-ware on a machine. But like everyone around here says, graphics are not a game, graphics are good for movies and realism. but how many people play on-line chess or checkers(hundreds of thousands dare I say millions)? It’s more of a matter of marketing, and getting the word out there.

4.I guess I don’t see a reason for Java to become industry standard for game-dev, though it would be nice because I am very comfortable with it. Never-the-less if I’m not gonna write the libraries then there’s no reason for flipping out about what get’s abandoned or expanded.

Part of being a developer in my opinion is adaptability. Whether it’s creative solution to a problem or whether it’s learning O3D verses JoGL verses Java3D verses LWJGL.

If O3D is the next big step in the Java Game Dev community, I’ll follow it.
Though it just seems so frivolous to be counting sheep that haven’t been born yet.

wow I’m bored.

Google Sucks…that is all.

Anyone else think that Google is trying to get into everything and everyone. I’m sick of this big brother of a company thinking it can buy out everyone and do everything and take down every piece of data about me whether I like it or not.

I will not support any other google product other than the search engine, and now with live.com I may switch to them permanently.

They literally are becoming what Microsoft used to be: a company that would try to do everything and badly. Google, let Java do 3D for the web as it has been intended to do and you stick to your stupid search engine and butt out. Ok that is finally all…I feel much better. My ying-yang-wang feels great!

I don’t hate google. Not so much love though. The world is benefit from the great work google is doing. But because we are already standing somewhere, that is why our opinions always have standpoints :stuck_out_tongue:
By the way, what is ying-yang-wang?

I guess JOGL is a remedy of sun after the failure of JAVA 3D. It is not perfect, not even an integrated product.
JOGL has some good points: opengl is open source and wildly used, so people can get many resources from opengl; it brings 3D into java. Programming in java is relatively easy compared with C++; Java is still the dominant language, it has many benefits, I need not to point out them one by one.
But for people who had built product upon on JOGL, and more for people who had plan their whole career upon JAVA, the current situation of JOGL and java is really disappointing.

Guess again.
