Episode 11

Chris, I was really disappointed that you didn’t ask McNealy any questions about Java’s role as a client-end technology. This seems to reafirm my suspicion that Sun doesn’t have any aspirations in this area except insofar as mobile devices are currently supported.

Games is a huge growth area, but there’s a lot more gain to be made in the client side than in the server side. Yes, Sun has traditional strength on the server, but it’s only half of the equation.

Peter.

I think guests talk about their expertise, this time it was mainly serverside, which was to be expected from him.

That shouldn’t really reaffirm such suspiscions, IMHO.

Well, the discussion was really about the opportunity to use games for education. Point of fact, Scott was the one who wanted me to focus on the client APIs back in the day, so it’s not as if he doesn’t “get it”. Our conversation wasn’t about client vs. server, but about the potential of technology to help teach.

http://www.curriki.org link is missing from the shownotes.

Well, you asked the group for what questions they’d like posed to McNealy et al. I just expected you to actualy ask some of those questions.

These LevelUP vodcasts are awesome, thanks heaps for putting them together Chris 8). I missed a couple and had the best time last night watching them. You should advertise them here with every new episode!

And you’ve got some great guests - It was really interesting to hear from McNealy (former CEO of Sun) and the Activision POGO head.

Maybe Chris is too diplomatic too ask the really pointy questions… that’s OK by me. Also, Chris is batting for us out there! Blah^3 and AnalogKid’s questions were actually posed to the Activision head (and he gave interesting answers too!).

Looking forward to the next ones! 8)

Chris and the GTG are not doing more with less, they have hundreds of developers, it’s just the Sun doesn’t have to pay them all

Keep up the good work with Level Up, I’ve enjoyed them all. Although that mad bloke you see at the start of most of them, not sure of his name, he never says ;), but he’s, well, nuts, and it makes the rest of us java bods look bad :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, my questions were definitely aimed at McNealy - I wanted an opinion from the higher echelons of Sun, and now I won’t get it.

Yeah. Me too. I really like the podcast. It just grates me to be offered the chance to pose questions to Sun big-wigs and then have that reneged.

Peter.

Well, to be clear, and I should have told you the dates of the tapings, your questions were posted after the taping session during the last week in Feb. I will make sure that I post the studio dates from now on. Again, it’s not that I did not want to ask your question, it was posted after we taped the show. Sorry

Ah. Cool. Ok.
