End of Life notice for Java SE 6

I just came across this from Oracle:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html

They say [quote]Java SE 6 will no longer be publicly available after July 2012. Customers interested in continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JDK 6 have the option to purchase Oracle Lifetime Support.

Is this just part of a normal pattern as a new Java SE, (7) becomes the standard? Or is it a new way to cook up revenues? I’ve only been working with Java since late 2009, and don’t know if this is something to be alarmed about or not. I worry because I am a refugee from Microsoft, where it seemed like they were always coming up with new ways to nick their developer base.

standard practice. The only concern here is that they’re saying Java 6 - does that include the Java 6 Update X releases too? Because there hasn’t been a Java release after 6 for many years, except for the Update X releases.
