Elite - Javanicus

To announce the (almost) completion of Elite

visit http://javanicus.org to play via JavaWebStart.

Elite - Javanicus is a project to reverse engineer the original BBC disk Elite and produce an up to date version of the game written in Java.

Elite is a 3D space combat and trading game, which
recently achieved 10 out of 10 in the Edge magazine (Retro edition)

I have been working on this project, for fun, for the last
two years, and have had excellent help in the later
stages from Manfred Riem and Jan Bruun Andersen.

Future Direction: hope to refactor the code into
a more Java style, and add network play and lots
of other cool stuff…

All the sources are available in zip and via anonCVS,
details at http://javanicus.org

Would appreciate any beta testers, or even just take
a look and fly back in time.

Heh, that brings back some good old memories.

BTW, good job using JavaWebStart - by far the best method of
distribution.

Cheers.

Thanks Grom, I think WebStart is good for most of us,
but I am still seriously thinking about a version
(lighter of course) that can be executed in m$ jview,
just so that my potential audience don’t have to do
anything but download the game to their Wintel
boxes  of course I’ll have to take the midi and wavs
out, but that will only lighten the distributable jar.

thanks again for taking a look, all comments welcome.

Cool, it really feels like the real thing!
I only hope I don’t get hooked again as much as I used to be :stuck_out_tongue:

Had a problem with the fullscreen option. I could easily switch to fullscreen, but switching back did not work. I ended up having to kill the java process manually to get my desktop back.

Other than that it was interesting seeing Elite again. Nice job.
