Diplomacy

Any JGOers play Diplomacy? It’s an old board game that simulates World War I sort of. Aside from being a jolly old time, it is also very simple and doesn’t take much time to play.

If we get 5 people, we can play the Ancient Mediterranean map, or 7 people for the classic Europe map, or 17 for the giant World game.

I’ve played similar board games; this one looks good too. I’ll play a game or two if you want me to.

Seems like these games are a long term commitment, as most games are 1-10 days per game-tick.

I’ve heard about the ‘offline’ version of this game, and the main goal was to actually play out the diplomacy part IRL: do a bit of lobbying, being (overly) nice to somebody, trading territories.

I don’t see how this web-version comes close to that - to me it seems like slow paced Risk…?

Well some people play “gunboat” versions which have no diplomacy at all. I don’t really see the point and don’t do those ones. Otherwise there is user-to-user messaging, and global messaging. It’s not as good as face-to-face but it totally works regardless. You will have many shaky truces and backstabs.

I literally laughed out loud at that one. I have watched people take 3 hours over a single turn. It’s one of the few board games I know that takes longer than Risk.
