Michael Dell would love to get MS to lower the price of oem windows. What better way to do it than the threat of offering a better OS? M$ pricing of win xp is the reason pc prices have remained stagnate for the past 5 years imho. In fact Dell could force Apple to open up thru the legal system:

Apple sells an operating system for Mac hardware. There is no expectation that the OS should run on other hardware. Saying that is basically the equivalent of saying that any software developer can be sued for not porting their software to every possible platform there is,otherwise they are “illegally” tying their software to some hardware/OS.
By his logic Microsoft has been illegally tying their operating system to Intel processors, all it takes is IBM, Apple, Freescale…etc. to “force the issue in court”
And if I buy a car part that is meant to fit a Honda I can sue the manufacturer for not making it fit a Ford…
