Craigs Race - For Android !

Hey all,

I decided to port my Java4K entry (World Rally Driver 4K) onto Android (Googles Java based o/s for mobile phones). I took the advice I received from the judges and made it a true network game (so it really wasn’t just a straight port):

Some interesting stats…

After 4 months on the Java4K site:

  • 2852 people played the game
  • Around 300 people submitted high scores

After 1 day on the Google Market:

  • 1504 people played the game
  • 157 people submitted high scores
  • 102 people rated the game, and 82 left a comment

Anywho, thought I’d share that with you all. Seems like there is a fair old audience on the Android platform!

If you happen to have a HTC G1 (the only Google Phone available at the moment), you can play the game for free from the Google Market. Just search for “Craigs Race”.

Hi!

I own a mobile phone HTC Dream G1 with Androïd. I have to create a google account to use Androïd Market. Is there another way to try your game?

Awesome. =D I’d love to hear more updates on this in the future. =)

Sure can! Just point your phones browser to: http://craig.dlinkddns.com/CraigsRace.apk

Although I would recommend setting up a google account (even if you never sign into it). There are some great apps on the Market for the phone (and the Market notifies you of any updates, etc… of the Apps).

Cheers.

I got an Android phone too! I checked our your game - great job ;D You might wanna tweak your controls some more and then start selling a full version of the game with advanced options!

I got my game in the Android market too (Aevum Obscurum). I wonder how it compares to the iPhone?

Totally! However, I’ll have to wait until Google allows Australians to publish paid apps. ::slight_smile:

Just d/led your game. WOW :o You obviously spent a lot of time developing it. It looks fantastic! Can I ask, have you made a few dollars from the paid version? (I can’t see paid apps either).

Yes, I spent about 3 months working on it. So far, I sold little over 1000 copies (it’s in 4th place in paid games). I believe the Android phone just doesn’t have a very big user base yet, so I am thinking about porting it to the iPhone as well!?

Very, very interesting and inspiring story!

What are the tools to develop a Java game on Android? What’s the process? Is it easy, straightforward?

Thanks to share this great news and congrats! We need way more stories like that, hence JavaGameTome…

I’ve got an iPhone and I’ve been developing on iPhone. I actually ported my Java libraries over to Objective-C for Entities, Sprites, Worlds, etc etc. I was also interested in Android, but as you guys have said, the market is still pretty tiny.

Actually, if you know Java, it’s pretty easy to write an application. All you need is Eclipse and some of the Android tools installed! Publishing & signing applications is pretty straightforward as well. That reminds me, that I also wrote a fart application for Android: Noble Fart. It’s free and has been downloaded 140’000 to date (since December 2008). So, there is definitely potential!

:o That is a lot of people that want to hear a fart noise!!!

Update on the d/l stats. After 2 days on the Android Market:

  • 5,146 downloads
  • 294 high scores submitted.
  • 137 ratings, about 100 comments, and 5 PMs.

Interesting. Android is something I’d like to try out myself some day. I look forward to when some Android phones will become available here in Finland. I suppose HTC Magic is coming this summer, perhaps others as well.

140,000 people have downloaded …a…fart…application !!!

[insert long awkward pause here]

The guy who made the original “iFart” for the iPhone charged 0.99 for it and made $1,000,000.

5 days since launching and it has just cracked 10,000 downloads. 8)

Some interesting stats for which countries people are submitting high scores from: http://craig.dlinkddns.com/CraigsRaceServer/highscores.html?TopCountries

After 2 weeks, now had 21,000 downloads. I’m surprised interest hasn’t dropped off. Although, it’s still a long way from iFart.
