Commercial indie games gaining demand?

I downloaded “RIFF: Everyday Shooter” on my PS3 through PSN for just about 7 euro. Awesome stuff, and a very fresh and original take on an otherwise traditional gameplay concept.
What most intrigued me about it was that the game is actually created by one person alone, and that it is the most popular game on the PSN the last time I checked (which is quite deserved I would say).

It seems to me that this is a sign that such smaller scale indie games are getting more and more in demand, and now also on next-gen consoles. Given that it’s so easy and convenient on PS3 to buy games online, and given the prices of full AAA games, it’s easy to see why such original, cheap, and fun games are popular.

As an aside (I know everybody hates the subject in the meantime ;D) but java/OGL really does seem like a match made in heaven for such games. I can easily see PuppyGames selling bucketloads through PSN…

Yeah - if only there was a JVM and LWJGL binding for the PS3…

just before someone starts shouting linux, I assumes this is in “ps3” mode

Absolutely.

Of course, also notice the word ‘commercial’ in the subject (wich doesn’t go well together with Linux) and the references to the PSN (PlayStation Network) :).

I guess my point is that now more than ever there seems to be a real business case for a JVM on PS3.
In hindsight, I suppose this was never really the case on PS2.

Just an observation of a great opportunity for Java that sadly looks like it’s about to be missed… :-\

When I’m ruler of the world there will be a commodity Linux based console that runs a JVM and OpenGL and which downloads all its content wirelessly from teh intarweb.

Go Cas Go!

Oh how sweet that would be :stuck_out_tongue: (or would have been rather…)

It could still be possible to make a native compiler, but who would do it? Probably no good business in making anything like that. I would however get myself a PS3 on the spot if I could run my own Java games on it and have a theoretical possibility of spreading then through PSN!

Someone should say something like this to Sony:
“You need more games on PSN to sell, and you want to get rid of the notion that PS3 is too difficult to develop for, so so let’s create a devkit for indies which includes a JVM and OGL binding.”
Who of you would buy such a devkit for, say 1000 euro?

A question I have concerning commercial indie games, does the Wii Opera browser include the Java plug-in or some sort of JVM? I know it supports Javascript and Flash if I’m correct but what about Java? That would be really great to let say develop applet games or maybe downloadable games. Unfortunately, WiiWare supports only C/C++ development.
