Chris (NOT CHRISM) leaving sun (and moderator at jgo?)

Chris: Shame you are leaving Sun. You are really energetic and passionate about what you do, so it is a big loss.

Good luck with your new adventure, it sounds exiting!

Not to confuse with ChrisM. :slight_smile:

My same thoughts.
ChrisM = Chris Melissinos
campbell = Chris Campbell

well i hope there is a backup plan for JGO, if ChrisM does leave or for some other reason can’t maintain JGO any longer.

would be a shame to loose one of the best java gaming related sites.

No real “project/product” in IT depends on only one person. Think about Sun owning JGO and the other moderators here.

You’d be surprised. If ChrisM would leave, and not provide us with a database dump, this forum would die quickly, as it requires maintenance.

they are talking about Chris campell, not Chrism…

as far as I know ChrisM is staying…

So you think everything in JGO falls on the shoulders of ChrisM? Any serious company is organized at a minimum and have backup plans. Also, JGO as so many members and hits a day. How all of this can depend on one person only?

Well, I have no trouble imagining that at all. But maybe that’s just me.

Hey, I just read your sig. Fascinating! :slight_smile: I never realized the power of scripts in forum posts.

Shhh :slight_smile: It’s not a script, it’s a GIF.

Well, since we’re hijacking the thread…Either I’m having an acid flashback or my login name is appearing in Riven’s avatar pic.

yeh , i did pick that bit up, hence the use of the word ‘if’

it is quite a dificult process, I understand the gist of it, but I havent been able to do it myself, but that might also be attributed to laziness lol.

@kapta:

Oh I get you, my bad :wink:

Let me elaborate: I think it’s a small miracle JGO exists at all, as Sun until recently, never really cared about clientside, let alone games. I believe this site is the result of the effort of one individual that put a lot of hours into it. I presume the only role Sun, as a company has is paying for the server, the rack and the bandwidth.

Soon Oracle will take over, and we all know how they think about ‘nonprofit’ projects in general. They are very aggresive in everything they do, and as we all know, Sun is losing millions a month, and there is most likely no room for ‘pet projects’ like this that only cost money.

I agree, JGO is all Chris. He rarely gets the help of another guy at Sun to do a thing or two, but he’s the man behind the curtain.

Riven, your sig is not impressive to me.

Usually it’s

EDIT: Haha, I idled on the page long enough to notice that it’s changing, and does indeed include my name. Cool! So you’re stealing data from my cookies?

Yes. Yes it does.

Well folks, I am staying, so no worries. As for a backup, we, indeed, do them and on a regular basis.

After the hacking crash I experienced and had to manually rebuild everything in 2006, I was able to get proper resources to provide the services I need. Dirty little secret about the way I was able to keep JGO running for years at Sun was having to build my own rig, get in into our games lab in CA, convince IT to let us punch a hole in the firewall for that machine alone, then kept it hidden alongside other boxes in the room so people would not screw with it. I had one outage when the CPU fan died. One outage when a person in the cleaning service accidentally knocked a plug out of the wall, etc. When I tell you that JGO was started out of sheer determination by me and Jeff for Sun to recognize games, it was and we did everything.

Today, it is in a proper hosted facility, a Sun person (Charlie) who helps maintain the DB and server, and performs regular backups. Everything else is done entirely by me. EVERYTHING.

And, not to worry about the future of JGO. All I can say about that at the moment.

Chris, I’m really impressed by your dedication for JGO over all these years. What you stated in your last post really surprised me. By the way, thanks a lot for everything you did for JGO.

@Riven, doh! :o :slight_smile:
