Caromble! on Steam Early Access

Hi there!

I’m one of the five guys making up Crimson Owl Studios and I just wanted to show off of our first game (currently in Early Access): Caromble!
From Monday till Thursday we live ordinary lives as software developers at respectable companies but on Fridays we are Crimson Owl Studios - an independent one-day-a-week game studio from Utrecht, the Netherlands - developing Caromble! from our kitchen tables.

Caromble! is written in our own Java-based game engine. It relies on JBullet and a heavily modified version of Ardor3D.

Thank you for mentioning Ardor3D and big kudos to Renanse :slight_smile: JogAmp’s Ardor3D Continuation is still actively maintained, your patches would be more than welcome as it doesn’t support forward compatible contexts yet but I understand that it’s not your priority now. Good luck. I wish you a great success with Caromble. By the way, maybe you can indicate which version of JBullet you use.

I believe we use the latest version of JBullet found on http://jbullet.advel.cz/. It took us quite some effort tweaking the ball behavior and collisions to get it to feel just right.
We stripped and changed so much on Ardor3D the last years that a few patches wouldn’t cut it I’m afraid. However, back when we only had a few changes with respect to instancing and deferred rendering we did post our changes on the Ardor forum if I remember correctly.

Ok. I’ll have to look at other engines to see how they deal with the forward compatible contexts.

Yes but this forum is no longer available. I’ll be able to fix the few remaining problems.

Have you had any problem of high memory footprint with JBullet?

When will we be able to test your game? Will it be available only on Steam?

Bullet is running just fine but we only enable physics on objects that are used in the current ‘area’ of the game.

The day has finally arrived! Caromble! Chapter 2 has been released into Early Access. Four new Story levels, two new Skill levels and above all, Focus, the first of 6 Arkatrons: Caromble!'s super special power-ups. Check out this brand new trailer where we introduce Focus:

Besides adding awesome new content, we have done much more in this major update: We fixed some bugs, juiced up the graphics, improved performance, tweaked keyboard input and added gamepad support.
Furthermore, some of our players have mentioned that the difficulty in the chapter 1 levels was too high. So we have tweaked this and specifically for the last level to make it a somewhat more forgiving experience.
