Can I use the OUYA without a creditcard?

Hi,

I actually would like to play my own games on a controller/ouya, but just a few questions…
I use LibGDX (wow, rare), so is it easy to port my games to ouya? I haven’t seen a gamename-ouya project that has been generated by libgdx setup, yet…

Also, isn’t it a bit of a money-waste? If I want to play my game with a controller I can also take my controller(s) with usb-cable for PC, right?

Thanks for all opinions/reactions in advance!

Ouya is an Android console. If you use LibGDX, you can build an android game. Throw in the Ouya ODK, and it’ll run on the Ouya just fine.

I’m not sure why you’re asking if it is a money waste… It’s like you’re saying you don’t want it. If you don’t, then yes it’s a waste. If you would like it, then no, it’s not a waste.

My experience with my Ouya is mixed. It is pretty neat, and uploading games to it is relatively easy after the initial setup. The earlier controllers were finicky, but I’ve read that they’ve been since improved.

OUYA controllers seem much better now. I really like the one I have and as Troncoso said, it’s really easy to get your android game on there - getting it certified is a bit more tricky since theres some general rules to follow but even that only took a week.

Cheers,

Kev

Okay thanks for all reactions! They upgraded the OUYA controller? Sounds sweet!

I think an OUYA is very cool, thats why I want it, but I ask it because I am not sure why I should buy an OUYA if I can just play it with controllers on my pc.

In other words: why buy an OUYA if you also can play games with a controller on your PC?

Cause it’s awesome.

Kev

Maybe I just have to experience it, indeed.

I have a decent amount of enjoyment out of it. and the ouya controller works fine for me, not sure which generation I got?

I always show people the same game as their ‘first ouya’ experience. and that is “No Brakes Valet” (2 player versus only)(if you have 2 controllers that is!) its free and fun with 2 people, its silly :stuck_out_tongue:
Then some ice/air hockey type game sometimes. Everyone always walks away saying how much they enjoyed it and how cool it is.

There are some games on there that don’t lead to first great experiences.

While I have nothing in the ouya store, I wish deploying to all consoles was as easy to the ouya, at least for ‘testing out’ development and java support!

Exact, so the console is okay, only the games are not that ‘well’? Now, thats no problem for me, because I want to play my own games, and good games will come at OUYA too as (indie) developers are going to port their games to it (and that can be bad, but there are also (lots of) good indies)…

I think the console is great personally. I haven’t played on it a bit now and never fully explored all of the games.
There is always a way to set it up for it to behave like a nes/snes/etc… emulator/rom which is quite excellent too.

I think the bad reviews of it, are of people who picked poor first choices for games.

Was thinking of getting an Ouya, however with the varaity of Android devices (tablets/phones) out there today you could probably use one you already own. I decided to connect up a phone, Galaxy S4, with two bluetooth gamepads and a hdmi out adapter (doubles up as a charger while outputing). Seems to work great as a console for playing classic games on a TV especially with the varaity of emulators out there plus has better spec than the Ouya.

Thanks for that idea, though I dont own a Galaxy S4 but an old HTC (3 years almost) (still working heheh, not planning to buy a 600 euro phone) and I think an ouya is something else than mobile gaming? But yeah, Im also not sure if I want to buy an ouya, I can also connect my controller with usb-port to pc, but yeah thats something else…

Ouya’s are not too expensive, so maybe I have one here next week. However, I am not a millionaire, so I cant throw money away

Is the controller upgraded? I can’t find any articles/info/whatever about it :S

Only real difference I see between OUYA controllers and xbox/ps3/rumblepad is the touchpad, but from what I’ve heard it’s way too small…

Maybe they had to put it on the back of the controller, like the PSVita has, thats working lots better and is then also very nice to use in games :S

But maybe this is fixed with the upgraded controller? Or what is that upgraded controller? Can’t find anything about it?

Oh I guess everybody meant that the controllers were improved before they were released, okay then :stuck_out_tongue: Well, Im gonna try this thing!

No.

Bad experiences, can you share 'em?

I don’t have a creditcard so I first need to know if it is possible to use the ouya without a creditcard??? I saw at the internet from not? But I saw on the ouya website that paypal was supported? I only have PayPal :S

I (still) want the Ouya, I cant compare it with PS4 because an Ouya is waaay cheaper, PS4 400 - 40 euro for controller = 360 Ouya 80 - 40 euro for controller = 40 euro  Maybe not that good calculation, however…

Ouya hardware isn’t impressive and the controller and software are not well designed. No pause button? No way to detect if a controller has disconnected? When reconnecting a controller it might come back as a different player? Wut?

Pause button issue is fixed isn’t it - i.e. the central button now has to be double tapped to get the system menu - meaning you can use it as pause happily?

The latest SDK support being told when a controller is disconnected.

So far whenever I controller is replaced it comes back as the next player available slot - seems ok(ish) to me.

Agreed on the hardware. Controller feels very natural to me. Thought I use a PS3 controller as well which is also works quite nicely.

Cheers,

Kev
