Hi!
I have 5000 page views per day on my site. Is it enough to generate money from that to pay my hosting? I would like to join an affiliate program, but I dont know which one.I dont really know how they work.
Which one is paying better?
Any suggestion would be great!
Thanks
You could take such a affiliate program, but I mention it won’t bring you enough cash to pay the bill only with the affiliate program.
Its just a small income to support the site.
Pages like Spiegel.de, ibm.com and all those big sites might get enough cash from affiliates to pay some of their hosting bills.
Banner advertising is enough to bring in $100k per annum for medium sized sites (i.e. something the size of gamedev.net) if you work hard at setting up good advertising contracts and have the “right sort” of visitors.
You will need at least 6 months of history (i.e. proof of your hits for the last 6 months) and proof that you can sustain the hit rate. You will also need information on who your visitors are.
Rates are exponential in the number of hits - getting twice as many hits gets you much more than twice as much money. At low hits the rates tale off to nothing, rapidly.
FYI JGF currently gets significantly more than 5k hits a day and I haven’t even bothered trying to get advertising for it yet; I don’t think that’s above the minimum threshold to be worth it.
Also, be careful about dodgy agencies who will take your hits and pay you nothing - it happens a lot to small sites.

Don’t put ads on JGF please ^^
Chman
Nothing’s being done yet in that direction, but the site needs to raise consistent revenue from somewhere in order to guarantee its own future and sustainability.
It has also always been part of the long-term plan to raise considerable revenue so JGF actually gives cash to games developers, and advertising is just about the easiest way of doing that.
If you have any better ideas, feel free to get in touch…
I’d be fine with it if you can find a clean form of advertisement… something that doesn’t take over the view Something like Google text ads that can fix in with the layout and be unobtrusive
Yeah, I did some preliminary research to see how the market had changed since I last looked, and google ads appear the best of the bunch. Especially since you can choose to run the text ads horiz or vert - so you can change the banner shape to fit different page layouts on different individual pages.
You mean PPC advertising… They pay you for every click your visitors make on their ads, right? This could be an option… Are there any other programs which works like the Google ads?
I found the PPc from Tagetpoint. It works like Adsense from Google. Their site looks really professional. You can customize your ads and they serve you well targeted ads.

Their is also http://www.content.overture.com/d/, an other PPC.

You missed the spamming troll.
NEWSFLASH! After 3 weeks of advertising, JGF has earned a grand total of:
10 cents
This is on pay-per-click. I’ll give you a clue: we’ve had few enough clicks so far that I could count them on the fingers of one hand.
Anyway, most of that time I was only running ads on the test server (which wasn’t really worth using until very recently, and wasn’t public), and even on the old server we’re significantly down on the 5k hits/day we used to have - not surprising, given there’s been no updates in about 3 months!
Also, the ad agency ran “fake” ads most of the time, waiting for the site to stabilise and prove itself not to be a fake site. Now that their system is happy that JGF is a bona fide site, it seems to be running real ads most of the time.
So, I’ll carry on this experiment a bit longer, see where it goes.
[warning: offtopic rant in the form of a faux irc log]
Hey, can I put huge animated banners on your site?
Eh, sure. if you pay me.
Yeah, I’ll pay you if our banners work and people click them!
Why should I carry the entire risk for the banner you produced, advertising only your product?
