Call of Juarez uses Java

I’ve just noticed that the upcoming Ubisoft-Game “Call of Juarez” (a fps in a western setting) uses Java. It’s from Techland (like Chrome was), so i think they are using it as a kind of scripting language. Anyway, i just wanted to mention this. The demo is already available…just google for it.

It’s nice to know ubisoft it’s not using java just for other platforms than PC.

stumbled upon this on a board

[quote]Looks like part of the game is Java-based. Not sure if it’s just the menus or what, but it seems to be a bit more than just that. Very odd, as Java is pretty slow and cumbersome. Some guy suggested somewhere that this game is coded in Java, which is ridiculous. Hell, the game wouldn’t even run at all in that case! If anyone that knows Java can decipher some of this info and tell us what it means, it’d be great.

[quote]The engine definitely could stand some improvement, but thats not a major concern. Considering if any/part of the game is running in Java, that could explain some things.

ouch

Ignorance. Nobody said this kind of things about Chrome . And Chrome got good reviews . This means that it’s possible to make good comericial games in java.

Whether its true or not, doesn’t change the perceived speed of users regarding Java!
and to be honest - this game has 4-5 minutes of loading time for a level, so I can very well understand that they’re trying to find something that is responsible for the extreme slowness.

Well in any way, it’s good that such persistent ignorance is not holding back major game developers to use java. Probably because they just know better than that.

Far Cry it’s also extremely slow , but this doesn’t affect it’s popularity(and it’s not using java). I don’t think that what users think is very important . The great game producers know better .The interesting part is that they do not use java to ensure portability , they probably use it for greater productivity.

Not that slow…the loading times in the Call of Juarez-demo are a joke, even on a Raid-system with 2GB of ram. I’ve never ever played a game that loads that long. But i’m sure that this problem isn’t related to Java. The problem is, that people don’t recognize Java as long it does the job and as long as it does it fast (i’ve never got a single complain about Paradroidz being written in Java…most people simply don’t notice that) but if something goes wrong, they remember the “java is slow”-thing and blame it for their problems.

hi

call of juarez is made by developer from Poland (Europe) -> Techland yes they are creators of chrome,
generally chrome engine use java, i do not know how becouse i have not checked it yet but as far i remeber from somwhere they juzt have included simple java jre with the game so in game files there is catalog java jre something like this. I think they have just made some wrapper betwean java jre and game engine, so game engine delivers pure java classes which are later interpretated by jre and then it call game engine functione etc. Nothing as hard as someone could think

in all Techland games java are used, i am talking about new games based on chrome engine, latest Techland racing games alse were using chrome and java And ode for physics

Polish Power!!!

Ubisoft also used Java in Myst V
