Building a new PC

Guys, I’ll be building a new PC this December (nearly 14th or so) so I’m getting some hardware. Here’s the list of things I’ve in my mind.

  • CPU - Intel i7 4770k - $385
  • Motherboard - Gigabyte Z97M-D3H - $152.64
  • HDD - 1TB Seagate Baraccuda - $61.86
  • SSD - 128GB Samsung 840 - $70
  • Monitor - 24" DELL with HDMI (Thinking, no specific model yet) - Approx. $220
  • Cabinet - IBoll ATX - $35.53
  • Graphics - 2GB NVIDIA EVGA GTX 760 - $208.87

These are my considerations, I’ll be reusing my 650 WATT PSU from my current build for this, so I’ve not included it in list. Any recommendations?

I recommend you instead gift it to me

Install GNU Linux ;D

Sure! I’ll Tripleboot the new machine. Considerations are Linux Mint, Windows 8.1 Pro, OS X Yosemite 10.10.1

i recommend the gigabyte GTX 970 G1 gpu instead of 7xx. bit more expensive but, more bang (duh’) but less power-hungry.

Thanks for the recommendations, but that exceeds my budget of $1200.

I’d also seriously consider a SSD instead of (or in addition to) a HDD. The performance boost is well worth the compromise in hard disk space.

I’m more of an HP fan than a Dell fan, but that’s just me. And I go Linux Mint with Cinnamon Desktop environment, which is pure awesomeness. Runs so lightly and boots up lightning fast.

…and it cannot detect Windows 8.1 while installing for dual-boot. I’ve tested this on several laptops from Lenovo, Acer, and Asus. It’s great as primary OS, though (while not counting the draw-backs of all Linux distributions).

If you’re spending this much money, really consider an SSD. The performance increase is very noticeable.

I highly highly highly recommend you invest in an SSD. As Elsealabs said, it’s very much worth the money as the performance increase is insane!

Am extra 150$ will get you an ssd and a GTX970 (given you can get it on sale).

Wait another month, put a little more aside, rumor has it that nvidia is releasing the GTX960 soon.

Thanks for your recommendations, I added a Samsung 128GB SSD into my list. I’m going to get it for $70 in a new year sale.

Are you getting both the SSD and the HDD?

If so, load your OS(s) and games onto the SSD and use the HDD for general storage. Maybe but your IDE and games and stuff you use frequently on the SSD as well, because it will make them run insanely fast.

Sometimes I feel that my Original Surface Pro is faster than my custom desktop computer because my Surface has an SSD and my desktop does not (saving up for one!). Even though my desktop would blow the Surface out of the water in graphical performance, the little things (WinKey-S searching, gif rendering, file exploring, eclipse load times) feel MUCH faster on the Surface. Even though the Surface has generally inferior hardware, it feels faster than the desktop.
