Bought a Mac Mini

Well after having worked on a windows laptop at home for quite a while now, because my desktop machine exploded, I finally decided to get another computer.

I bought a Mac Mini running OSX. I must say I’m very impressed with this machine and with the OS. I was a bit afraid of moving to OSX but I’m getting used to it very quickly.

I’m not a linux guy so I was a bit scared of the update/install process programs use. However after having updated the OS and installed X11 and Gimp as well as some other programs I am very happy. No fuss no muss installs, beautiful. Came with J2SE 1.4.2 and webstart. I don’t see the SDK perhaps you have to install that separately?

Any OSX devs have tips for me setting up java SDK?

The SDK should already be there. It should be under /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home. Just type “javac -help” in the terminal to check.

yep sure enough it’s there, thanks.

I’m sure you’ll have already noticed in the licence agreement that you’re required to immediately grow a goatee and switch to decaf… ;D

LOL, now that’s funny!

So did you get the basic model or upgrades? Details!

But you likely want to install the developer pack from the Apple website. It will give you the javadocs and the JRE source code.

I got the basic model http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html . The stores here don’t have the “faster” version yet. I wasn’t willing to wait for it, and didn’t want to order from Apple directly. Right now I’m just getting the feel for it, I think I’ll probably upgrade the RAM. Eventually I’ll need to get an external firewire harddrive.

I couldn’t see paying an extra $100US to go from 1.25ghz to 1.45ghz when the bus speed on both is the same. The guy at the store want to sell me an “extended waranty” for $200. I told him to take a hike, at $500 for the machine if dies I can buy another one.

It comes with a couple of OGL based games and both perform very well, an accasional gitch but the Radeon 9300 card seems to do the job.
