Blast Passage

This is a work in progress of my entry for the Retro Remakes competition.
It’s a cross over between Bomberman and Gauntlet, two awesome games that i figured could fit together really well.

Play now!

Since this is the four player, one keyboard version, the controls are:

For the single player and online versions, the controls will be much more sane.

Please think about french AZERTY keyboards if possible.

Most excellent! Could do with some sound etc. etc.

Ah, yes. Would it be enough to just make player 1 move up with both W and Z, or are other changes needed?
Or I could just add the ability to remap keys.

It’s pretty fun! Is there a way to beat the level, though?

That looks like a sweet game contest! I might enter.

I’ve posted a lot more information on this project over at the retro remakes forums, including details on the synthesizer I wrote last night.

I tried it the other night (in single player mode, because I have no friends :’() and it looks to be on its way to being a great game! Graphics and sound are very classy considering the ‘retro’ constraints, and the combination of Gauntlet and Bomberman is inspired!

I wasn’t able to exit the first level though. Is there something I’m missing?

Gameplay is pretty slick so far, but it did feel a little awkward having to use a weapon that’s only really effective when running away against crowds of enemies that you’re expected to attack head-on. In particular, the monster generators seemed unnecessarily difficult to destroy – monsters spawned as fast as I could kill them, and it takes a lot of hits before the generator is dead. Perhaps the levels could be more Bomberman-like, complete with destroyable walls, so it’s possible to ‘tunnel’ your way to a generator instead of wading through a Gauntlet-style crowd of enemies surrounding it?

I’m looking forward to the final version!

Simon

In the version on the website, entering the exit tile does nothing. As soon as I’ve made some more levels (I’ve got 14 done so far), I’ll put up a new version.

Thanks for the feedback =)

There’s a new version up with 20 levels and online multiplayer!

The online part is waaaaay laggier than it should be, but I think I can make it mostly playable with some clever interpolation and client side prediction.

The game is done!

Play it, or learn more about it!

Online multiplayer doesn’t work too well against my server, but you can host your own servers if you want to play online with/against your friends (instructions in the about page).

[edit: Hey, cool… 1500 posts!]

^^ BAD screenshot

It doesn’t show all the awesome new enemies

Awesome game!

very nice job!

Thanks guys. It feels really good to have something finished. =D
