So shortly after joining the forum here I realized that accounts don’t have the functionality to import images from there local computer to use for account avatars (I also believe that forum posts are restricted in the same way).
This isn’t a problem, I’m just curious what services you guys use to host your personal avatar images as well as screenshots or other media you wish to show off.
Yeah, imageshack’s been around for a while. I guess the whole reason I’m reluctant to use that service, is that just googleing imageshack brings up all sorts of cases of trojans and worms being embedded in image imports.
Any idea if DeviantArt is any good? It’s suppose to be really non intrusive, but I don’t have a clue if its capable of using direct links.
I don’t think DeviantArt is the right place, for uploading all sorts of images for use in your forum posts. That would be a little… exploiting their servers.
TwitPic is a nice service. They keep your pictures for ever, unlike TinyPic who deletes them after 30 days. I also had to write to TwitPic for some special service (against their terms actually), but I asked nicely and they responded that it was all fine and dandy. Good service!
Dropbox is also very nice, because of the option to link to public files such as images. That’s also nice for deploying games in here, if one is not in charge of a server. You’re limited to 2 GB there though, so you might not want to post many many pictures from there.
Google has a service called Picasa where people can share pictures. My parents use it a lot, and I can only think that it doesn’t limit you in terms of storage, since it’s Google that’s hosting it. They never seem to be sheepish with storage at all.
Imgur is also nice and simple, and I don’t believe they delete pictures either, becuse they have a “request deletion of images”-service. They also provide a nice api that also works with java. I’ve used it with great success to host pictures for players, taken in-game.
