Best form of Adventure game

What is you favorite types of adventure games.
Here is a list of a few i know :

1.Point and Click

2.Puzzle

3.Platformer

Pick one or more.

Platformer, easily.

Point and click for me - I don’t like frenetic action (at least not all the time).

Puzzle platformer

(anyone wanna guess which game I’m talking about?)

3D platformer

adventure is about story, so 1 and 2

longest journey and dreamfall ftw

Puzzle + Point & click. Fun to play and (relatively) easy to make. Still Life is good example, as indie ones there are so many out there.

I’d go with puzzle platformer aswell.

That’s also the most fun watching someone else play (say via live-stream). Watching someone play a point & click… meh

… Braid? … Limbo?

Braid of course. Limbo I suppose, though it’s not quite the same thing.

Platformer. Played a lot of Mario World on my dad’s SNES…

There is no best, there are gems in each genre. But I’d say one thing against point & click: it might be easy to program but its actually the hardest of the bunch to do properly. Generally you need either a very gripping story or a good dose of humor (preferably both) to keep such a game interesting, otherwise it boils down to hovering the screen looking for hotspots.

The platformer to me is a good choice as you can go so many ways with it just by tagging on more elements; puzzle, RPG, action elements… Take the golden oldies Another World and Flashback as an example. Several works done by the now defunct Psygnosis are also good sources of inspiration - Shadow of the Beast, Obitus, Ork, Leander… Or what about Bitmap Brother’s Gods? Button, key and platform puzzles galore and hundreds of secrets.

The most fun of the bunch to me is an even more obscure game from the golden days called Elf.

(this guy is playing like a tard, but whatever).

Its a (very good) platformer/shooter at heart but it adds adventure elements because you need to collect, exchange, combine and use items to progress and finish a level (example: you need to get some pegs for your nose so you can pass a smelly troll without fainting). It also has minor RPG elements because you can buy upgrades which CAN make the difference between winning and losing. Its all the little things that make the game a rich experience, along with large, free to explore multiscrolling levels. And the whole purpose of the game finishes it: you have to save your girlfriend from imminent execution. Now that’s a solid reason to draw your magic swo… ring and risk your neck!

I could go on forever  Check out Escape from Colditz for example for another type of adventure game that is quite unique:

Or Valhalla, a devilish top-down puzzle adventure of which I can’t ever get enough.
