Applets still viable?

I would like to know if applets are still a variable option or should i go with webstart? Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Orbit Ooze

yeh they are still a viable option.

especially if you use a library like PulpCore

Thanks, for the quick reply. I plan on starting my game really soon and can’t wait to share it with the world.

They’re more viable than webstart, I’d say.

Imo, applet > straight download > webstart

Agreed.

They never did get java web start to level acceptable for mass use.

I think Webstart is better than a straight download, personally.

I’m thinking more:
straight download > applet > webstart

ALTHOUGH… I have to say that webstart is FANTASTIC for use during development and beta testing. It keeps everyone on the same version and makes quick distribution of updates easy. Only reason it doesn’t work well for release is because it places Java before the application.

simply

YES more today than yesterday

Applets are too weak. Things are better now but I prefer Java Web Start that has been less frequently broken until now. I would rather say :
IzPack > Java Web Start > applet > straight download

too weak? if signed they can do everything a normal java application or java web start can do.

:o … is that a joke ?

I have manged to upload files to system32(because of my inexperience at that moment I was uploading files right to the windows system32) using signed applets, from the moment the person accepts certificate there is potential treat to the security of it’s pc… I have never used Web Start, but I believe you can do with Applet everything you can do with web start…

Too weak?

I thought applets were THE way, just sign it and thats all you have to do.

Yes totally weak
Where are the sharks with lasers!

Agreed, or if using 3d - JPCT.

I have never deployed anything onto the web before so I am speaking strictly as a user and heres what I think.

I like the idea of wbestart for large or complicated apps/games because you know its going to be simple and you know you wil get all the uptodate stuff.

I dont like the idea of webstart for smaller games/apps because it annoys me downloading them and waiting for them to load, feels like Im downloading lots of rubbish, applets feel alot more intergrated and you dont notice the downloading etc. which is nice for adding simple things to websites and especially for games.

Straight downloads are ok I guess but I dont see the purpose of it for games…

And games that require installation (I have seen java application and even games like this) is a big no no, I will never give anything like that a try…

I would say unless the type of game calls for more, applets are best for games in my opinion as a user.

yeh, just being able to go to the site and have the game instantly start up is in applets favour.

Don’t forget to put instantly in quotes.

I agree, it’s nice when you don’t have to download anything for running the game. I can imagine that most people that play the game prefer it that way, feels safe.

Why do you have to bring this up?!?! To make my stomach hurt?!?!
