anyone want a gmail account?

Has that happened to everyone (invites removed)? I said to some friend I’d send an invite when I got home.

A friend sent me this:

http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/

What do people make of it? I think this page errs on the side of scare-mongering, you don’t have to be google to do stuff like this with emails. I fact the only way I can see to stop this is to use pgp on everything you send, and then everyone else needs to use it too.

edit: typo

Actually I think that article barely touches the surface… the data-sharing and analysis goes much deeper than that.

I have heard of programmers that were hired to do the sort of information tracking behind the targeted advertising on Amazon and such. The individual quit to work for 1/3 the pay because he viewed it as so incredibly immoral.

This involved tracking personal information through cookie trails (cross referencing cookies from many different companies), being paid to steal information from other companies databases, etc.

There is no doubt in my mind at all that google is harvesting every word of every email and tracking it between users to produce information for advertisers and marketing companies. But since this is happening with pretty much everything else anyway… just live with it and use gmail’s nice features. (It’s not like your emails don’t pass through other servers on their way to the destination no matter what service you use. For sure there are boxes out there that are reading them.)

Equally anything you type here would get picked up by a googlebot… or anywhere else… …

Fear! … or not.

Kev

Thats pretty much what I replies to my friend. Everything you do online is tracked in one way or another for a lot of different reasons. That’s what I meant by scare mongering it’s not like google are the only ones doing it.

The only solution really is not to use computers and what would we do then? ???

Dan.

Arrrrrrrgh, now that is scary!

Kev

Not a bad idea to use PGP. If you send an email unencrypted you must be aware that it could be read by someone else (and I don’t mean the receiver  ).

Agreed. Some people just don’t understand that unencrypted email is like a post card - no privacy and no way to stop it from being altered.

Not that this is a big problem most of the time.

Will.

“You have 6 Gmail invitations. Invite a friend to join Gmail!”

I’ll reserve two of them… so 4 fastest will get a one!

I didnt know people actually still wanted these things. I tried to give mine away a while back but there was a lack of interest

If you want one of the invites from me, come to the Unofficial JGO IRC Channel and ask me for one.

I have 12 invites right now.

I’ve got a few as well. Any takers?

Malohkan ponders a new game involving breaking in to the GooglePlex, defeating the Google-bots, and saving the world from mass storage of personal information… using LWJGL when he learns how to use it
