any way to access bluetooth features ?

im not too good informed about all apis on mobile phones so im keen on getting some facts about the usage of bluetooth.
i already read some things about jsr82 but i cant imaging that any “standard mortal” handy comes in with that api.

how is the horizon in that way ?

I’m not sure what you mean by “standard mortal”, but JSR-82 comes on the following Nokia phones available today:
Nokia 6600
Nokia 6230
Nokia 7610
Nokia 6670
Nokia 6260
Nokia 6620
I.e. all the MIDP 2.0 phones that have Bluetooth. But no, the low-end phones don’t support JSR-82, because those phones don’t even have Bluetooth.

Forum Nokia has a tutorial on JSR-82 that you can download, as well as a couple of useful supporting documents. I demo’d a JSR-82 game on Nokia 6600s at JavaOne last June.

ahem… im still alive ;D

did i get you right that you think, all(!) devices with midp2 support and bluetooth onboard support jsr-82 ?
i your answer is yes, i have some counter examples:
first of all my beloved Motorola V525…

Sorry, no, I was just talking about Nokia devices, because that’s what I know best. As far as I know, all Nokia MIDP 2.0 devices with Bluetooth also support JSR-82 (but none of them support the separate OBEX API in JSR-82).

Those I have personal experience of are Nokia 6600, Nokia 7610 and Nokia 6230.

Try the Bluetooth section of Ben Hui’s site, there’s a device database and all.

shmoove

first of all, thx for the knowledge.
the bluetooth site is very interesting.

im only a little sad that java and bluetooth enabled devices are not automatically jsr-82 featured. this makes no real sense to me …
it would have been so exciting, to develop with bluetooth.
:-[

Sadly, ‘JSR-82 featured’ is not automatic, but takes a substantial implementation effort. All manufacturers have limited implementation resources and must pick and choose what to implement; in many cases, JSR-82 probably doesn’t give enough ‘bang for the buck’. Even Nokia didn’t yet implement JSR-82 in its MIDP 1.0 Bluetooth phones, e.g. Nokia 6310i, 6820, 7650, N-Gage, …

Remember that multi-player gaming is mostly an accidental side-effect of implementing Bluetooth - manufacturers add Bluetooth to phones primarily to support wireless headsets and wireless PC connectivity.

‘bang for the buck’ ;D
thinks thats really the point.

perhaps youre right that bluetooth was ment to be a tool, but the possibilities !

think only of all the (crap, but very popular) cartoons like pokemon, digimon, “eatmyshorts”-o-mon. all these stories are based on the ‘cool’ factor to carry a pda-like thing in which a battle-enabled program lives. and every kiddie can be opponent to another one.
sure, nintendo smell the deal and has equipped their newest pokemon realeases with wlan.
but that kind of use is only one of many points…

what do i want to say ? im depressed … ::slight_smile:
