Yes, I used to make a living from music. I used to record and produce music in my own studio, was a hired musician and a teacher for studio engineering.
I play bassguitar, keys and drums (bassguitar is my ‘main’ instrument).
These days my music is just for fun.

It all sounded extremely amatuerish, mostly because I’m a percussionist, not a musician.

It’s a kind of funk-hiphop crossover band. I played all instruments on these songs (except some guitar tracks and of course except in the live recording) and I recorded it at home with the rapper. I play in two other bands too.

Yes, a single key minor musician.
In addtion to C# I’m quite good with D#, F#, G# and A# (b) also and on a piano it sounds a little bit Chinese then. So maybe I’m a minor musician, too.

I just promoted/threw a smallish underground electronic music event here in San Francisco this last weekend. It was cool… About 150 people showed up, so it was bumping for a good portion of the event.
I had a pretty decent techno/hard techno set mid night with a grip of new records and got a decent reception. This is house/trance land… Well most of the US is, but the SF seems rather thin for diversity of electronic dance music… So it was nice…

Heh heh… Yeah… I meant techno the genre…
There is of course the Detroit techno scene here in the US, but I’m not much into it.
I must concede that for .techno. I follow mostly what is going on in UK/Europe; though there is a small techno scene here spread thinly around the country.
It freaks me out when people give SF the nod for having at least some techno activity compared to .none. in most places. I think it is way dry out here, but then you travel elsewhere and go my goodness…
And if that isn’t bad enough I’m also into the eccentric reaches of where electronic music goes… Also quite into microtonal music, and this stuff just isn’t visible that much at all.
Ok… enough sillyness on genres of EDM and other such pontification as this isn’t the topic; though interesting…
and Erikd… the cost of a 133MB download is not much considering the cost of vinyl. It is upwards of $12 a record (for 1-4tracks). Yuk! When I started it was $9 a record. Plus I am a sound quality nut, so its 224kbps encoded.
Must mention that your audio work sounded good too though it wasn’t a particularly high bit rate source that I listened too.

For a somewhat tech twist to all of this… I am looking to get out a very expressive audio middleware product next year for game development and other apps… I am currently on a working group with the MMA that is defining an open spec for interactive audio systems.

My system will be able to do what it allows and a lot more such as real time synthesis, procedural audio… You can kind of think of the system like programmable shading for graphics except you write “audio shaders”.

I attempted to start a record label last year, but didn’t receive US distro for my 1st record… Little bummed still as that put a damper on my production for now…
Yeah… Unless you were into EDM (and more specifically techno) then grabbing that mix set is kind of moot… It does trip me out though that unless you get the records or by chance someone has a mix then most likely those tracks won’t be heard… Granted I’m sure somewhere on the net is an enclave of folks that might have ripped copies of obscure genres, but even then…
I am really interested to see all of the indie record labels put up their catalogs for digital distribution. There is so much good EDM out there that is hard to find.
A side project of mine is to create a USB enabled DJ mixer. I have created a prototype made from Phidgets (www.phidgets.com) and it works with my framework/GUI nicely. I am also mostly done in integrating support for Ms. Pinky which is a vinyl cueing system for digital media. Cool thing is that you can assign the vinyl cueing system to any parameter in the framework… say manipulating a graphics shaders variables… Gonna be fun when I get this stuff out.

In a month or so (probably more) when I have yet saved up more cash to throw into this project I am making a 2nd prototype as I have found a dude with a CNC mill… damn though… good buttons are hard to come by for non-production sized runs. Gonna spend $100 on getting 11 nice buttons… bastards! I’m also powder coating the 2nd prototype, so it should look more legit in regard to gear…
