Age of Conquest IV for PC, Mac, Linux, Android & iOS (Strategy/WEGO)

I finally managed to release the latest of my Age of Conquest series. I think this one came out really nice, but I am planning to do some more updates over time.

The game is entirely coded in Java using libGDX and OpenGL. iOS-port is done via RoboVM. Still waiting for Apple to approve the iOS-build though. It’s already 3 weeks since I submitted, so far 2x meta-data rejected & 1x rejection of the binary. It’s also released on Steam!

I am not much on javagaming nowadays, but I’ll come back later & answer any questions you guys have. Let’s hope there are no major bugs/etc. in this release ;D

Cool graphic

This looks very impressive, similar to Risk and Diplomacy (board games) or Civilisation (PC).
Well done implementing the multiplayer aspect. I’m looking forward to trying it.

I downloaded it and it worked well. I must say I was very surprised and happy to see that the game is largely free, I was only expecting a demo.

The graphics, smoothness and responsiveness were great. The resizable-window was cool, rather than full screen exclusive. But perhaps the window should be maximised by default rather than small because then it would be easier to scroll by moving the mouse to the screen edge like a normal RTS. The ctrl - mouse wheel zoom is a great idea.

I did the tutorial and to be honest I didn’t get a good feeling for how the game is supposed to work. I was a little confused about which territory was mine since I could see all territories. The intro mentioned Rome, but my people seemed to be in North Italy or France. I couldn’t seem to control the Rome city. Perhaps a pulsating colour on your own territories would make it more obvious which cities are yours.
It’s not clear how to move troops, I expected to slide them from where they were to where I wanted them to go, like Civ2. I did attack a town but then I couldn’t find my troops anymore and couldn’t seem to attack anything else. I had to google what the acronym WEGO is, it might be worth writing what it means.

Perhaps a 2 minute youtube video detailing how to do things before the tutorial would be nice.

Overall, it looks like a great game and I intend to give it more time this weekend.

EDIT: forgot to say, WEGO is a great idea, especially for multiplayer where it is super frustrating waiting for other players. Here’s a definition for those like me who don’t know what WEGO is:

[quote]Turn-based games come in two main forms depending on whether, within a turn, players play simultaneously or take their turns in sequence. The former games fall under the category of simultaneously-executed games (also called phase-based or “We-Go”), with Diplomacy being a notable example of this style of game.
The WEGO system is this: Everyone issues their orders for the turn at the same time. You hit “End Turn” and all side’s actions are made at the same time. It eliminates the unbalanced turn-based part but also adds an extra dimension by attempting to anticipate what your enemy might do while your orders are being carried out.

Thanks for the feedback

The map should actually scroll when you move the moves to the edge & even outside the Window? I am using LWJGL, so it was little bit of a hacky-implementation though detecting when the mouse is outside, especially where. You are on Windows?

The YouTube video is a great idea! I’ll try to do that.

Yes the scrolling works well, I was just commenting about how the window itself wasn’t maximised, it took up only about 3/4 of the screen. Seems like a fully expanded default window would be better for immersion and so on. I am using windows 7.

A very solid game!
At first play seems to be a little difficult, because player need to find a way not only to conquer but to keep provinces! No major bugs here, I’ve played 5 games so far and found no bugs.
I’m not sure if diplomacy works on easy, I mean all AIs keep refusing my proposal until I get more powerful than thems :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d like to play on other maps, but hey… I have to pay! Fair enough I suppose, but my suggestion is to add some other maps, maybe little, for free, so you can get more people playing on it!

I really like graphics, sound effects, not too much menus, too much options for a game like that. Somewhere reminds me Crusader Kings 2, maybe because free map is in Europe!

Congratz on your game on Steam!
The game is nice, graphics are fine and it works well.

I thought the game was great so what I would like to see in your game:

  1. A quicker game and server would make me happy.
  2. Quicker gameplay. Possible solutions: a map with a smaller amount of tiles! If you really want to make it awesome/fluent: real-time gameplay with a gradual income of x gold per second.
I changed the entire post after I learned (again), that I should use a different approach. I really have a long, long way to go -.- I probably should go with an education on communication.

Thanks for the feedback:

re-server: I am still working on it, but it has improved I’d say

re-quicker game-play: It’s a turn-based game. I cannot just convert it to real-time. It would have to be a different game with different mechanics. However, you can play 60 seconds per turn which would result in about the same.

re-payment: the game comes with 2 free maps. I need some income somehow, so making it completely free is not option.

My suggestion is to add some small maps, maybe 3 more ! Total of maps for free version is reasonable, no ?
