135 gigs of assets available for the low price of $13

Edit: I just finished downloading, extracting, and categorizing everything. it’s ~135 gigs of usable in any engine assets.

Crytek is selling a whole bunch of royalty-free assets, those that are from Crytek can only be used in the crytek engine. The others, which the majority are by Madison Pike, have their own license and can be used in any engine.

Here’s what Crytek says:

Here’s the Madison Pike license:

yeah I saw it… but Unity and Unreal Engine 4 are free
and…
you really want to make every asset yourself anyway and not use premade shit, unless you wanna make some generic piece of crap

And you can use these assets (well, most of them) in UE4 and Unity… (and libGDX, JMonkeyEngine, etc)

You’re honestly telling me that using pre-made Trees/shrubs/vegetation (among many other things) is a bad idea? If I make it myself it’s going to be a guaranteed piece of crap; my occupation is programming, not art/modelling.

Oh – I totally forgot. Sonniss has 16ish gigs of free audio FX as well, from GDC 2016.

well, making a game is more than just programming. in fact most of it is not programming.

I would disagree slightly, but this is a subjective opinion as it all depends on what engine you’re using and what type of game it is :). Some are mostly art, others are mostly programming.

Personally, I’d rather spend my time enjoying doing what I’m actually good at. I doubt if my occupation was art/modeling I’d be spending time in a Java Gaming forum – it would likely be some where else (IE: a game engine forum that has programming-via-drag-and-drop, for example). I’m not saying the artist wouldn’t be here, but the common thing that ties us together here is programming.

Recreating an asset, either art or sound, would be a gigantic waste of time for me, and of course I’m going to end up with my own bits-n-pieces. But if I can manage for things to be reasonably good looking and not go broke in the process – I’m all for it.

Can't wait to see these assets start popping up in Jim Sterling's videos

I’m of the opinion that, used judiciously, pre-bought assets are OK, and the deal seems nice for people needing those kind of resources.

Unfortunately, the usual low-effort hacks will start churning out sub par games using those assets soon, which will inevitably taint any other games using them, hence my opening comment. :frowning:

Boo! Why bash anybody elses work and offend the maker? Also why posting negative on a helpful topic?

Depends on the game. Arguably, a game that is mostly comprised of asset work is a bit empty and lacking in depth.

I agree fully with Oskuro

@cylab encouraging more generic lackluster games to be featured by Jim Sterling is not really something the over saturated market needs.
And I wasnt naming names, so no direct bashing x)

I dont really agree and this has been talked about a few times on this forum. I dont super enjoy programming… Its a means to an end… I wanna make a game. Eventually I want to game design, produce, write, direct and not have to program anymore.

Hi

I’m not interested in those assets even though I’m unable to create better ones as I’m not a computer artist. I prefer using artworks under a free sharing license but I wouldn’t blame a game creator who buys some assets even though using the graphics of another game doesn’t make yours unique because I still find it more honest than using copyrighted content without the prior consent of the copyright owners.

I find it is impossible to buy models from creators. They made them certain ways. They are not compatible with all game engines, especially yours.

What format are the cryengine files in? I have never used it but having a collection of pre built models to test things would be great

The cryengine files (which are very few) are crytek weirdness (there is a tutorial here https://github.com/travnick/CryBlend/wiki/Exporting-a-Simple-Character-with-CryBlend) and the files from MadisonPike (135ish gigs) are .FBX, .max, and some are .ma (maya maybe?)

… Where is the love for OBJ…

Do what i do. I got me an art department. My brother. He is pretty good. And quite fast. Get 4 rigged models in just a week. Each will probably need a week of polish+ a week of texturing. But then you have no licence issues. Nothing looks like bolierplat “downloadable models” etc.

Ok so fine not for everyone. But high end models that everyone has is just really high end.
