1.5.0 has been renamed Java 5.0

OK, this is probably old hat to some of you, but it’s news to me. It does seem like a rather odd versioning scheme. The full J2SE title is now “Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0”. Why not just drop the “2” and call the whole thing “Java 5”? Or even “Java 3”? Or even “Java 2004” :stuck_out_tongue: ?!

Whaddya think?

Well at least they have FINALLY after how many years bumped the majro version from “1”… Why they didn’t do that when they Called JRE 1.2 “Java 2” is beyond me… that should have been Java 2.0 and the 1.x would be long gone…

Finally they start to get it right… but then leave in the “2” so we have “Java 2 version 5.0” - sigh ???
This is basic counting… I learned it 30 years ago on a kids program called “Sesame Street” with a vampire puppet guy named “Count”. … One JRE , ha ha ha … Two JRE’s ha ha ha… Three! JRE’s…"

Maybe the SUN marketing department didn’t watch enough enough TV when they were younger?

or too much ;D
So what’s the official name for the next version? java-2-j2sdk-1.5.0-tiger-jdk-final-jre?

Now I know you're angry but lets not get stupid here. There is no such thing as too much TV

Kev

Hmm j2se (1.)5.0 beta 2 is out and I never got the news…

Are you sure the new 1.5.0 is 5.0? I’ve seen the link on the java.sun.com webpage, but the link still points to a 1.5.0 reference. I just assumed someone goofed when they updated the link from the first beta.

Where did you see this?

That’s what they were calling in at JavaOne… and there were a few blogs about it. I think the version string is still the 1.5.0_01 format (just making up the _01 part for now)
