Worried, Scared. Life wasted? [ANSWERED]

The scary thing is, this reminds me of my life…
Learnt Python, learnt Java, then realisation… The only differences being that I learned HTML before Python, I learnt LolCode after the realisation (I suggest other people to learn it, it is amazing), and that Safari on my iPad crashed while typing this message (congrats Apple, 13th time this week)…

But I just see it as this simple statement: Who cares if you get famous?

  • yes, you will get money - but a job can give you money as well… So can advertising
  • yes, you can get popular - but do you want to be chased around by everyone and then get hated after something with your game goes wrong?

I read Notch’s blog and he didn’t want to be in the big game biz… He just accidently fell in… He tried to run away (left mojang)… But after stuff like Mojang’s licence change, everybody blamed him… No one saw him as Notch anymore… Everybody saw him as ‘Minecraft’… If anything happened with Minecraft, it was his fault… So he sold Minecraft to microsoft and stated:
“If I ever create another game which gets somewhat popular, I will abandon it completely”

I just see programming as a fun hobby and a future position… And when you read over your original post, you said how much you loved programming…

Me, I’m not in it for the money, I’m in it for the programming…

Remember, this is just my opinion and you can do whatever you want in your life… Becuase, well, it’s your life…

EDIT: my iPad Safari crashed again when I tried to change one word which I misspelled… Congrats, congrats…

gamedev is pretty hard to break into either way if you want to make a living off of it.

I don’t want you to take this the wrong way but I’d suggest not to look at the fame and money side of it and just do it to enjoy it while applying for development/web jobs while working on your hobbie in your spare time and get into that moment where you loved to learn, they say that if you program your whole life you’ll never know everything so if you’ve near enough mastered Java, or you think you have. Learn something like C / C++ / ASM and enjoy it like you enjoyed learning Java.

Just be happy with who you are, be happy with learning, you’ve got lots of time ahead of you to not worry about being ‘at the bottom’ - No ones at the bottom, some people get lucky with there craft and trust me, being really ‘big’ at something can be more hassle than its worth. Jealousy, hate mails, going bankrupt, market going downhill, which could lead to actually hating what you’ve achieved and wished you just stayed with who you really was as a laid back enjoyable hobbiest. Don’t get me wrong, there is the positives in having a big rep but you’ll realise when its time to settle down and start a family (which we all do!) you’ll then realise what all the fuss was about.

Carry on enjoying it and you never know, you might have that top ‘notch’ idea! But don’t fight with your own mind it’ll happen, just stay focused.

Damn. I gave up and now have a job at an insurance company… :’(
(I am not kidding…)

Oddly enough I started out at an insurance company…
