While I’m complaining about tripe, for me it goes beyond stereotypes. I like my fictional characters to be understandable in their actions and goals. On the up side it’s cool that the quality of television series has quite improved.
I was reading notch’s blog (here) to see why he sold minecraft to Microsoft and I found this very interesting video about Phil Fish…
I suggest other people watch it although it kind of scared me as a games developer…
(Sry… Couldn’t figure out the youtube tag…)

I dont know if i feel sorry for him or not.
Well… you probably should.
He’s genuinely not who the “Internets” portray him to be. Almost every quote you ever hear attributed to him has been taken completely out of any context simply in order to paint him as a monster. It’s like some giant flashmob hate thing. I can’t really see why it occurred other than it looked like a combination of lowest common denominator + bullying… pretty similar to what occurred lately to Sarkeesian and friends.
Aren’t people awful?
Cas
Compassion is always a good thing to feel.
Very interesting video by the way. It goes into the “systemic” (dunno the right word) aspect of this. Yeah, “people” are awful, but the same “people” that hate on the interwebz may be great neighbours, fathers, colleagues or just someone nice that helps you with a smile when you drop your groceries. I doubt we should wait for “people” to improve. Humans are humans with human strengths and weaknesses, they won’t change.
It’s the context or the system in which people are situated which brings out the worst or the best in people (as in the herd, not in individuals per se). Improve the system or the context and people’s behaviour improves. That’s clearly visible here on JGO, where with some wise moderation and reputation to be maintained discussion is overall very friendly.
The wild, “free” and anonymous internet is overall a horrible place due to a lack of systems that help people behave nicely. Freedom is relative.
The people attacking others for ‘being assholes’ are assholes. Enough said.

Hmm…
(I probably agree, but phrasing :P)
Hitler was an asshole.
Okay this is getting phisolophical…
Maybe so, but that’s not my point. Remember how “being assholes” was in quotations?
I’m referring to the people that irrationally accuse others of simply “being assholes” without any further explanation just so they can later attack them as part of a bandwagon.
- Jev
Maybe you should clarify whom you’re referring to.
Don’t agree with Cas and some other people who got like converted from this video
Phil Fish is an asshole. The end.
Now, him being in the gaming indie public eye generates way more hate and anger than it would normally.
However if you say, sounding serious, “all japanese games are garbage” in front of like 20 people. I guess 9 will call you out and 5 will call you names.
if you do it on the internet its just more people.
Phil Fish is the same asshole with or without the internet, unless he deliberately says things to be hated online.
The only difference is the anger is magnified so much because the audience is so big.
He simply doesnt know how to interact with people. A person should be friendly and polite, especially to strangers and especially in front of a huge audience, none of which you know personally.
I could care less if Mr. Fish is or isn’t an asshole. It’s moot.

Did you bother to watch it? It’s actually quite interesting and does not discuss whether the guy is an asshole or not.
[quote=“Cero,post:32,topic:50861”]
I’d hardly expect the audience to start making death threats to him or his family, do you? Or would you consider this a proportionate response to someone giving his - asked for - opinion on some computer games in a somewhat blunt way?
[quote=“Cero,post:32,topic:50861”]
Self-criticism is difficult, isn’t it? Your last sentence made me laugh. Here is you, Cero, posting on the internet, while preaching that you should always be friendly and polite, for all the world to see “Phil Fish is an asshole. The end.” Does that not strike you the least bit as ironic?
Really, why do we or does anybody care, I think thats actually the best standpoint. - just personal opinion.
Be friendly to others. If they are not, be it though, or you are making it escalate.
You might disagree with me here and this is fine.
Well over a month ago. Yeah its true but I don’t agree with the implication. A lot of people are famous, not all of them we hate.
This is not the audience’s fault, it purely because he behaved like he did. Do some people hate Kojima or Gabe Newell, I guess so, but these people have a normal spectrum of love and hate. Phil Fish does not, for good reason.
It seems to be happening now on the internet if you act like Phil Fish, so I’m just saying it is to be expected when the audience is this big and the opinions are this harsh.
Also let’s not forget he always seemed to wanted this attention. If can’t stand the heat… be nice or get out.
I don’t think self-criticism is hard at all. Well I do strive to be polite and friendly, I’m not sure using the word asshole just like that voids it completely.
He has strong radical opinions and expresses them loudly openly in an aggressive manner.
Considering what he said, I feel asshole is not THAT impolite.
But I get your point.
“Exactly. The bitch deserved to get raped. Did you see how she was dressed? I saw her drink at least one glass of alcohol. And the way she was dancing? The cunt deserved it.”
Something like that?
I would like to point out that, from my point of the video, I saw it as (well, more of the start of it) he just accidently got famous without publishing any games…
Other indie programmers didn’t like this…
People start getting crabby at him…
He starts getting crabby back…
Everyone starts to hate him for being so crabby…
Although no one cares about the people being mean to him…
He just fell in to ‘being famous’ so fast that when he hit the bottom he exploded into a million little pieces…
When people get mean to you, you start to feel down… When you feel down you get a bad attitude…
No-one really cared how he was feeling… They where just feeding the beast…
NOTE: I was actually going to write a lot less but my fingers just couldn’t stop…
Yes I have watched all of the videos. I thought they were thought provoking. I note that the developer behind Saints Row - which was covered in the videos - said that the criticism was warranted and they’re taking that into account for future games.

“Exactly. The bitch deserved to get raped. Did you see how she was dressed? I saw her drink at least one glass of alcohol. And the way she was dancing? The cunt deserved it.”
Something like that?
We keep saying that, but at the same time we all lock our doors, we have expensive alarm systems, we use anti-virus software, we hire bodyguards, we have anti-cheat software for our games… If you forget to lock your door and your house gets emptied by a robber, it’s obviously not your fault, but that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t have done anything to prevent it. There are lots of things that we shouldn’t have to do, but if we don’t some people will take advantage of us.
