What's your favorite OS and why?

I’m starting to quite like emacs. :persecutioncomplex: ducks

Well I guess i’m the only one who like to use a Mac (the PC master race guys can come kill me latter :P) i mainly use it because of the large number of key bindings that let you easily scroll from one application to another, and also due to the multiple desktops you can have on one screen! (yeah really cool i can have Firefox on one desktop and eclipse on another, instead of fumbling around with open tabs and such shudder) one other main reason i use mac is Geektool which lets you run bash scripts (not bat) on your desktop, and you can make some pretty sweet desktops like this: http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/geeklets/system/another-tron-inspired-desktop-1/ and this: http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/geeklets/collections/my-current-desktop-collection-of-geeklets/ (sorry for the big links im not sure how to compress them) but yeah all you pc master race can now rage

To be fair all of those things can be done on PC just fine.

I am intrigued… How? :expressionless:

https://www.google.com/search?q=windows+multiple+desktops (also plain old alt/win - tab navigation)
MSYS/Cygwin + some others allow bash scripting if one so desires.
Rainmeter is one pretty impressive desktop customizer I know of: https://www.google.com/search?q=rainmeter

In Mac OSX they even took out things like the mouse acceleration curve.
So if you dont like it, tough nuggies :expressionless:

Also to do a hibernation instead of sleep, I had to use the console.

The amount of limitations on mac is just staggering…

The File manager… dear lord. It doesnt even have “cut” and “paste”. “You dont do that on mac” - SURE… sure.

To be fair, all those things were copied off Linux! :stuck_out_tongue: Which may in turn have copied them from elsewhere (eg. Amiga)

Sometimes think Apple is that annoying guy who walks into a room full of people who have been partying for hours and says “right, let’s get this party started!” :emo:

And about the one useful thing the OP can take from this thread is that most of the software we’re all using can run anywhere!

The File manager has “cut” and “paste” at least it does in OSX Mavericks

All other programming edtiors are a bad joke. After over 30 years of using it I’ve barely scratched the surface.

VirtualBox and grab a preconfigured image(s).

I’m with this guy, except that I hate iOS slightly more than the others.

My own Linux distro with only BASH and GCC :stuck_out_tongue:

Seriously though, I can get away with anything. Currently I’m using Windows 8.1 for programming and gaming, and Ubuntu Server Edition for playing around with my PC (and for using Vim <3)

running Linux Mint right now

Win7 for play. OSX for work (laptop). Unix (most familiar with Debian) for both work and play.

Picking favourites is pretty meaningless.

I hate all of them. They’re all bad.

I can relate to that ;D My choice of OS goes something like this:

  • DOS
  • Win 3.11
  • Win 95
  • Win 98
  • Suse Linux
  • Win 98 SE
  • Win ME
  • Win 2000
  • Win XP
  • Ubuntu (can’t remember the version)
  • Win Vista
  • Win 7
  • Ubuntu + Win 7 Dual Boot
  • Arch Linux

And that brings us to today:

  • Ubuntu for everything else than playing games and Win10 for playing games

I’m quite happy with that now. Arch Linux was interesting but I don’t want to invest so much time anymore in my OS, that’s why I switched back to Ubuntu 14.04. It’s a pity though that I have to switch to Win10 for games. Oh, and multi-monitor support is quite bad in Ubuntu.

Why? I love Ubuntu for developing, for the command line, for its stability (usually). I also like the Unity desktop

I’m under Mageia Linux 4 and I use PlayOnLinux to run Windows games without Windows. By the way, I often play with non-Windows games ;D

for Desktop OS: currently happy with Windows 8.1 on my Laptop (I use Start8 though)
for Server OS: Debian

I once needed to use Mac OS X and it was awful, but thats just my opinion

Eh, I could care less which OS I use as long as it is stable. Quite honestly the only reason I use Windows is because that’s where the vast majority of the software I use is. I wouldn’t mind using a Linux distro, but there’s no good image editor (I don’t like GIMP), and only one of my Steam games is available for it.

I’ve used all three major OS’s, and all of them were fairly equal. Windows is stable and has tons of software written for it, but it plays into the UI game too heavily. Most Linux distros are great for developing, but it’s missing key software and games. OSX is very stable, but again is missing some software and games.

Huh, what? Generally found this really good.

Finally I’m not the only one! ;D

For programming (Java only) I use a MacBookPro. The reasons are:

  • So far it never crashed once (using this installation for 2.5 years now). Still running smooth like it’s her (yes my MCP is a female ;D) first day.
  • The color-true display makes it really easy to create amazing assets.
  • Basically for design/programming(Java) and stuff like that I prefer my MBP.

But sometimes you just want to recycle that bi**h. (No folder integration for example)

For gaming I use my Windows 7 desktop workgamingstation. Well at least for games that are Pc exclusive. PS4 and XBONE are just way better imho at this moment. Maybe when hardware for desktop catches up I switch again.

P.s.: Linux can be booted on my MBP and on my eeePC1000HE (Kali that is ;))

Not beeing a fanboy on consols and OS is really great coz I can use them all coz I own them all ;D
