What's your day job?

Riven: That actually sounds really cool. What kind of modernization do you do? (As in, do you work on updating the curriculum, or the computers, maybe a mix?)

LiquidNitrogen: I live in a VAN down by the RIVER!!!

Gibbo3771: What! How do you get money from studying? I feel like this information could have come in handy for me in the past…

DrHalfway: That sounds crazy. I’m currently in a class involving AR and VR. I just started a project using OpenCV, and my mind is blown with every line of code I write. Can you tell us more about some of the projects you work on?

Hey look at me actually using the mentions feature!

Anyway, I work for the FAA (federal aviation administration (the plane people)) designing prototype GUIs for air traffic controllers (the folks in the towers telling planes what to do). It can be really interesting, but you would be terrified by how far behind the technology can be- we’re still working on using GPS to tell planes where to go!

Interestingly, almost all of the work is in Java, and most of my stuff is in Swing. Who says Swing is dead??

Edit: kevglass, what do you do??

I’m a co-owner at WebHotelier, we launched in 2008 and I’ve been working there ever since. Well, from home actually, the company HQ is 800km from where I live. It’s nothing exciting technology-wise, even though it’s a JVM based platform, I have most fun doing SQL magic (yes, there is such a thing). For the past year or so I’ve also been doing extensive research on a “next-gen” re-architecture of the whole thing, which should be keep things interesting. We’ll need it too, since we’re currently expanding internationally.

In my free time, I work on LWJGL and (try to) raise a little girl.

I am a scientist at the EPFL in switzerland. Previously I was at the Vienna University in Austria. I write Coalescent simulators that roughly simulate evolution on DNA. Its not going well and i am probably going to drop science at the end of the year. No idea what is next. Would love to go off grid and hitchhike around the world with nothing more than a change of cloths and a passport. My wife is not keen on the idea.

In a previous life/s I was in telecos, computer security, physics and of course i did try and get a commercial pilots licence. But due to parking a motobike in the side of a police car at 50km/h a head injury meant no more class one medical.

I work for a small web agency specialized on none profit, healthcare and welfare websites. We also make one of the biggest online counselling platforms in Germany.

Good luck! Mine is 4 and I (nearly) gave up on raising and moved on to survive

As a part time Scout for a global sports information gathering company and web developer. Game development has been on the down low for quite some time now.

What about yourself kevglass?

the usual college-level jobs. studying robotics.

I design algorithms and do data analysis for a biotech startup. It pays the bills but there’s always the temptation to try and get in to enterprise stuff or finance.

0% interest loan for students in Scotland :).

This makes my American heart weep.

At the risk of making you cry more, that does not include the £50 each month for travel expenses. As well as free software such as Unity Pro, Unreal 4 liscence and a years free subscription to Adobe Suite. Its ridiculous how much shit you get for free over here, however it does come at a slight cost and that is incompetent teachers.

Nothing, still in middle-school. Quite boring. At least I have free time, though! And, education and stuff…

I am in tradeschool right now. After that I will probably work for either SAP, Microsoft or Siemens.

All teachers are incompetent

“Those can can, do. Those who can’t, teach.” - old proverb

Cas

I’m a junior in high school (grade 11), and we are not “allowed” to have jobs during the school year.

During the school year, to make up for the lack of a job, I do freelance web-development work, such as this. I make close to no money doing freelance, as it is pretty hard for me to get clients.

During the summer I intern at Reputation Capital Media doing some web development on their site, and their client’s sites, but I mostly do ghost writing and graphic design. I also intern at Shopper’s Choice, working half with the back-end team and half with the front-end team.

1st year CS student on Warsaw University of Life Sciences here.

Not all teachers are incompetent, but I must agree that if you don’t want to learn something or come to school just to pass it and get a diploma, nothing will help you. Good teacher is a teacher who can interest you in a particular topic or field, from this point he/she can HELP you to get more knowledge in his/her field.

that made me laugh

Neither: we create platforms on which others can build. We also ship hardware (because 3rd parties couldn’t manage the volumes) and are the largest highend accesspoint & chromebook supplier in the country… without even trying, hard. The software is what ties it all loosely together. Loose ties are hard to manage.

I’ve worked as a contractor for a Japanese auto manufacturer for the last decade or so. My days are usually split between running the POD system for replacement parts, generating reports for upper management, supporting a myriad of in house solutions written in Access/Excel, and doing evangelism/development in Java of some more advanced tools that work with legacy systems like CICS and our DB2 based data warehouse. The formal stuff can be a bit boring at times, but there’s enough freedom to get involved with projects from other departments, like an in house logistics/yard management package that I get brought in to consult on from time to time, that it’s not a grind. 8)

Beats Texas. We have teachers that are incompetent AND psycho.
