What distro is that? I know it looks like that because of GNOME, but I want to try a new distro besides Ubuntu.
I’m using Fedora 20.
Dude get rid of gnome, it’s a piece of shit. It completely hogs up memory. I suggest you get something like LXDE or some other lightweight wm.
Umm… GNOME is actually decent up until the latest versions. I don’t know what you’re talking about, but even on my old netbook from ~2008, old GNOME ran fine.
Yeah, it does seem to use quite a bit of memory. Nonetheless, my computer runs it flawlessly and I never have memory issues. In a few years when software takes more to run and my laptop has more trouble running everything, I may look at a lightweight distro, but for now my computer isn’t weak enough to need it. I love how beautiful GNOME is, and my computer runs it just fine, so I’ll keep using it.
Memory issues? Dude tablets now have like 2 gig of ram. They can run win 7. If you have memory issues you should really just buy more ram.
Asus N550LF Notebook:
15.6" 1080p Touchscreen (Jesus I can not express how useful this is for developing android apps…lol)
Intel i7 4500U
8GB DDR3
nVidia GT 745M (Been decent so far, nothing really struggling to play)
750GB 7200rpm
Oh and I duel boot Windows 8 (ripped off copy, screwed up bootloader and was not having the clowns at PC world wipe my drive) and Crunchbang.
I have been using Windows pretty much non stop for months now, just a pain to hotboot over to Windows when I want to fire up a game, I usually have EVE in the background so when I get stuck on some code I can go kill some idiots for relief.
An ok laptop, it is more than powerful enough for anything I am going to develop, it plays my games like World of Tanks, EVE Online and Torchlight II (with the missus).
i run linux mint on a 4gb dell laptop thing
has customizable workspaces so i can spread out stuff and switch between super fast
then i dual boot windows on the side so i can play some of them games
I code on Xubuntu and Eclipse.
Windows 7 I run just for games.
Linux for everything else.
At work, I code on Notepad++ and Win XP
From the usability / GUI side, I still like Win XP the most.
