This may have been stated before, but i wasn’t listening :-[ Whats the current state of the Mac version? I’ve found that my project supervisor is running on OS 9, yet I don’t think thats supported.

Is there any chance of a compatable port appearing, or am I fresh out of luck?

Jogl requires a Java 1.4 implementation and there is none on System 9. The latest version Apple has for System 9 is a 1.1.8 implementation. So I’m afraid you’re out of luck.
Jogl does work on OSX now though. If you install 1.4.1 update 1, it even works in Jaguar.
