Well, these bots target SMF (or specific versions thereof). So, the first step should be some customization of the sign up form. I’d put two extra rows at the very beginning… one textfield which shall remain empty and one textfield which shall remain unchanged (IP+salt -> hash).

I’d also rename the names of all inputs and replace their descriptions with images.

Everything which gets through that is either a human or a JGO specific bot. The latter is somewhat unlikely.

To be honest I think this is a far better solution than scaring away new members (assuming most first posters will add a link to their game).

First time posters that post a link in their first posts get an email notifying them why their post was rejected.

The custom spam filter already filtered 6 spam posts today. 8)

One slipped through, because it was signature spam.

I think I’m going to alter the account activation page, of which you get the link in your registration mail, and put a custom ‘captcha’ in there. I think that will solve either everything (so that I can disable the spam-post code) or will be a great combination with the current solution.

About captcha, in case you wouldn’t know, some spam bots are highly sophisticated so that they’re able to recognize basic to a bit more complex ones. I don’t know of you have the possibility to require a fairly complex captchas on the form so that most of the time only humans are able to read it?

Specialised captcha-busting software is better than some humans.
