New feature: coding experience

What a great feature  Like the others said, it’ll be great if you wrote the month/year and it updated based on time. I will definitely be using the metric to better understand exactly how many new developers exist, and their interests in gaming and programming in general.

As a extra suggestion, some people have proficiencies in certain libraries like java2d, slick, libgdx, jogl, javafx, jogl, etc. It would be nice to know as its own slot what these developers feel they are most proficient with. That way it’ll further help people know who actually “knows” what they are saying in library specific threads, and help developers feel more confident about helping those individuals.

However, with the limits, it is just a nice afterthought… Maybe in the signature space :point:

I like this.

tbh who cares about “java experience” in particular ?
yes this is a java board, but if someone has 20 years of programming exp and only 2 of java is probably as good as someone with 10 years of java experience.
you may argue… dunno. But picking up another language just seems to get to know the intricacies of that particular language and has nothing to do with programming ingenuity, but whatever =D

maybe what is more intersting is years of experience and years of professional, as in getting payed for, experience

Learning another (reasonably different) language helps you look at programming differently, so I’d say even a person with 7 years experience with 2 of those years in Java could potentially be just as good as someone with 10 years only Java.

It takes time to learn the java language and the java eco system. Anyway, it’s all way too vague to define. We shouldn’t attempt it, and keep things simple. As said, if you feel the current metrics vastly misrepresent your current awesomeness, just lie to compensate

Man-years only give a rough indication of your skill. It would be way more accurate if we were to combine that with your IQ, education, nutrition and average amount of sleep. Now that’s not gonna happen folks, that’d be creepy.

nah, just wanted to say what comes to mind
I dont care either way :stuck_out_tongue:

Ive never been payed though!

This experience thing really is gunna make me look bad compared to everyone else XD!

And dont anyone dare say, “You dont need the experience system to make you look bad” haha.

My suspicion is that it will boost the goodwill towards you.

We’ll see how it turns out. It wasn’t too hard to implement, so if the need arises to yank it out, I will only shed a few tears.

I will shed more. :frowning:

I like it. Nice feature

This board has so many nice features compared to the default installation of SMF.

Mike

Sheesh almost do not want to put my experience. Basically have been coding as long as I have been on here. All these people here that are younger with more years in coding boggles my mind…well not really but I feel ashamed for not starting sooner.

I like this idea but it may deter me or others from answering or trying to answer some questions as we my no longer be taken seriously with the piddling amount of time we have been coding for.

We’re a relatively friendly bunch. I think this experiment will work out fine - even if we escort one or two beloved ones to the padded room, to reflect upon their snarky remarks.

Remember that sharing something ‘personal’ (eventhough this barely qualifies as such) most of the time results in a better relation. I think it’ll all be fine, but maybe I’m naive. That’s why you don’t even need to opt out: you’re not ‘in’ by default. Nobody is going to hold it against you if you prefer holding your cards to your chest

Ok, strictly talking I will count my first jump&run game, i have made as startin point for coding experience (on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum)

What do you mean by ‘padded room,’ Riven? You keep saying this. Does it mean to suspend JGO from them?

It’s the renaming of JGO Dishonourable.

I’d prefer overall experience to be shown instead of Java experience. I had only 2 years of java experience of 5½ years of general programming.

Nice feature BTW.

And what is/was this? What for?

I also support this. Maybe both @Riven?

It’s a rank that replaces your usual rank, to publicly shame you
But now it’s called “In Padded Room”.

@Jimmt
Already saw it, but what are you using it for? When? Why?

After this: back to topic.
