Moving to Linux...

I have the exception 1.2 so that guide does not work for me. One time I did install them, however, and nothing changed, so then I ran nvidia-xconfig and then GNOME froze upon start-up. Then in text mode I had to delete xorg.conf. I could try again, though.

didn’t you say that you have an optimus card?(all none medieval nvidia laptop cards)

You must use Bumblebee to have access to your gc, do not change your xconf with nvidia settings(nvidia-xconf)!!

my advice to you would be to restore everything as much as possible to the default.

  • default xconf
  • delete everything from nvidia “sudo yum remove nvidia*”

try the tutorial I posted again.

Bumblebee was already set up. I did the two things: deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf and yum remove akmod-nvidia and then it would run normally again, except that I still can’t get the resolution right D:::

I can, though, optirun stuff and then for glxgears I get about a 2.4x speed increase and for glxspheres a 12-13x speed increase, so it is obviously working. I just want to know why I can’t get this resolution right. It’s annoying.

Hi

I advise you to use the open source driver and to report bugs, it’s “better” on the long term. If the manufacturer decides for you that you have to renew your hardware, he will just stop maintaining his driver for your graphics card.

I don’t advise you to use Steam. GNU Linux is about freedom, not DRMs and there are tons of nice free and open source games for this family of operating system. I use Mageia Linux, I don’t have annoying Amazon ads and weird Unity window manager, it works very well out of the box, some people in my family use it even though they are not computer engineers. I have seen a lot of prejudices in this thread whereas the use of GNU Linux has become easier than in the very beginning, installing Debian in 2003 was so painful…

I have fixed my error! This forum post led me to the answer. Now I get my good resolution, and I am very happy! The only problem still is that some error happens with bbswitch from bumblebee almost every time I turn on the computer. It’s no error I can notice though, so no big worries there. The little error reported notification is the only annoying thing. Is it possible to turn that off? Also Skype has weird notifications that don’t come through the standard way, but that’s not too bad. It’s just because Skype doesn’t care about Linux. Does anyone know of an open-source program that would simulate Skype, i.e. Pithos simulating Pandora?

By saying not to get games with DRM because Linux is about freedom, you yourself are trying to restrict freedom. :stuck_out_tongue:

(blah blah blah)

You are not actually helping him. Not even one little bit.

don’t listen to these people who say “don’t use X because it’s proprietary”. If the proprietary version is better (not necessarily saying it is) use it. you probably don’t care about the source code anyways, especially for a graphics driver.

Steam on Linux is about freedom too - it’s about trying to keep a channel open for delivering games that is not controlled by Microsoft, Google or Apple. As the proprietary OSes get locked down, people are trying to move their business models to Linux, and I think that will ultimately strengthen Linux.

Pick one, install, change if not work. As simple as that.

Oh btw use Mint, Ubuntu without ads

It won’t strengthen Linux, it will just kill all the competition.
Linux is more than strong enough already.

It seems to me like Mint’s graphical interface is a lot nicer than Ubuntu’s also. I have no idea why, but I could just not stand Ubuntu’s GUI very well. I think Mint’s looks pretty good, but it’s a bit too much like Windows for me. If I am looking for an alternative to Windows, I don’t necessarily want something that looks just like it. I actually really like GNOME Shell 3 with Fedora 18. Many people hate it it sounds like, but it’s a very nice interface that takes up barely any space on the screen until you need to switch applications. That’s convenient to me.

You can change the “theme”. Mint has some variants, like the one with debian (Fedora) base so you can use that gnome shell, cinnamon, mate, and even xfce. I use Mint 14 Mate, single boot no other OS.

Edit: I picked Mate because it’s feel like OSX and I don’t have OSX.

I use Mint 13 with KDE (with the Oxygen theme).

I guess it sort of looks like Windows, but only because of the way I configured the themes.

I’m probably going to switch back to Arch Linux soon. Ubuntu is becoming too mainstream for me, but its all good for now. Arch is an awesome OS, but the thing that made Linux cool was that it was little known and only used in technology companies back then,

I just tried out Arch Linux about a week ago. Wonderful OS! ;D

I have Arch Linux ARM on my Raspberry Pi, and I approve.

Indeed, Arch was the one that appealed to me the most too; in this day and age of bloat I like things that stick to KISS. And the package manager is called Pacman, I mean come on that is an instant win.

Hello from Arch linux here!

Arch Linux was a great experience, I got it after rage-quitting from all of the stuff you have to deal with on Ubuntu.
Ubuntu just doesn’t feel like Linux for me anymore.
