JavaOne '07

Bah… We need more of you guys over here…

No, what we need is more games jobs in South Wales, preferably around the newport/cardiff area.

Anyone?

No?

Bah.

Was really cool to meet Michel (Catharsis) and his session seemed to have created of lot of interest (and questions) about the subject… And I should say, beer is good in San Francisco!

Yes Micheal, we’ll meet again Friday noon.

I have to go to my last session (TS) which is in 2 mins I guess! :o

Hmmm, all the beer I’ve had were served cold.

Yesterday I went to JavaOne party (after dark event). There was a bot battle competition and man, this is totally crazy! ;D Bashing on each other to try to destroy the other one. One had a kind of rotator (sorry if it’s not the correct word but I can’t find a better translation). So when the other bot approached this rotator you could see the sparks! Another one, called sub zero, had a kind of arm which was used to project other bots! This was really incredible.

At the back of the room, and it was really big, there was a lot of old video game machines and four of them were Daytona USA 2. Man!, this old game is still totally a blast! ;D There was also other car games, a lot of pinball games, 3 XBOX 360 (yes XBOX in a java conference  ) and a whole bunch of more classic and physical games. All for free.

There was 2 music bands and they were so so but still fun to see.

Ho! And I must mention the flying duke contest, which was presented by ChrisM. I haven’t figured out what were the rules of the contest but was entertaining for sure! Before the presentation Chris pluged so well the JMonkey engine with a lot of games using the engine. The only bug was that the videos were in black and white due to a technical problem. This issue was so contradictory: 3D tech totally lacking colors! ;D

So, really great party!

Just got home from the very long trip back to Sweden (~22 hours) and my jetlag is present like a thick fog in my head. ;D

I was supposed to publish the Duke Bean’Em game (including source code) yesterday, but it will have to wait until I’ve fixed a couple of other more important things. It was really great giving the session on thursday (TS-3073, “Write a 3-D computer game using Java Programming Language in less than 50 minutes”). Most people attending seemed to enjoy it and I hope that the game will continue to evolve it to something more serious in the future. I hope I can have it all available online by the end of the week. Any suggestions for future improvements are very welcome.

Yeah… I was supposed to publish source too for my demo, but it’ll have to wait for a little more polishing.

Cool… Yeah… I was the fellow at the end who suggested using a sphere for the bounding shape of Duke and using the normals of the colliding plane of objects to provide sliding behavior for collision detection. Code that I can send to you if interested…

I’ll look into signing up for a TS next year, but it seems hit or miss there…
