Good question :). Approx 14%.

I have now upgraded the account, so you can send money using credit/debit cards (seems to work OK).

EDIT: now 20%

IMHO its alot better to be independant of Sun. And, wow, the exchange rate really sucks right now!

P.S. unless anyone has objections, I’ll update the JGF about page with a list of donaters later today. Thanks to all who’ve donated so far!

Current donators (thanks very much, guys!) :

  • nonnus9
  • cas
  • kevinglass
  • rhmoller

Unfortunately, no more donations have arrived since my last post. This is not looking good :(. I have plenty of time left to cancel/refund the current donations, but I’d hoped it wouldn’t drag to a halt so soon :(.

Hold off on the refund button, the cause is definitely worth it. I’m in.

(If you put as much passion in this thing as you do towards webstart “evangelization”, I can’t see how this’ll fail  )

It took a while to set up my PayPal account, but I gave a bit. I’m a college kid, sorry I can’t spare more! I hope enough comes through to make this stuff happen

But man… 1200Gb/month, are you really going to need that? Why not start on a smaller server and move up as you get close to the limit? Or are you already there? If so, wow, that’s crazy

Thanks guys…we’re about 35% of the way there now

EDIT: I’ve added a corny “thermometer bar” to the JGF page, and updated the list of donators directly on that page too…

I still strongly urge you to split your hosting and move any downloads to filekicker or fileburst etc. - much cheaper that way. Then find a cheaper dedicated server. And don’t get so fancy with all this XML bollocks and XSLT. Just maintain a healthy, ordinary PHP site on some cheapass hosting package. Your money will go a lot further.

I’ve not entirely dismissed it (yet) but it’s unlikely.

The XSLT has already been taken outside and shot. It worked well as a stop-gap, and it is great that everything is in XML right now so I can v.quickly convert it to SQL, but its time is over :). My feeling is that XSLT is truly great for static page sites (where the alternatives are far worse), but it’s got too many flaws to really work outside of there - XSLT v4.0 or so may turn out to be something great in a wider sense, but the first few versions have been too chaotic and even now still reek of a solution trying to find itself a problem. IMNSHO.

Done.

Cases in point on the need for JGF to host downloads locally:

  1. Quix has disappeared (although I’ve been nagging OT to fix this :P)
  2. …the only version I could find online is distinctly unimpressive compared to the previous version at the old URL
  3. Wurm online’s current version crashes the JVM on two computers that it used to run fine on (I was trying to demo it to some people last weekend)

Basically, we need to host binaries locally merely to ensure that what is being served to people is the same as what we’ve tested (given the effort we put into testing and the benefits of that it’s stupid to throw that away by allowing authors to break the game without us having any ability to insulate ourselves from such problems. Not that it’s deliberate, but authors often do this stuff accidentally)

Uh, I wasn’t aware that Quix ever was on JGF? Are you sure you don’t mean S-Type? I never submitted Quix 'cos it only runs on windows at the moment due to lack of LWJGL builds, and I know you like everything on there to be multi-platform.
S-Type on the other hand did go down when I changed my hosting. However the version now up on my own hosting should be identical to the previous one.

Again, is this Quix or S-Type you’re refering to? I always try and make sure that publically playable versions don’t regress and remove/break anything that was already present, so if thats happened I’ve messed up somewhere. Is there anything specific you’re thinking about?

Sorry, I was being stupid and got muddled up. Caffeine withdrawal + being on the road with crappy dialup access charged per-minute makes me less than diligent and htoughtful when posting :frowning:

How’s the drive currently progressing?

Dan.
