IMPORTANT: JGO BOARD PLEASE ADVISE!

We have an issue raised in this project proposal that goes beyond the current scope of the rules:

http://192.18.37.44/forums/index.php?topic=10574.msg83382#msg83382

Please read the thread and advise how you wish me to proceed.

Thank you,

Temporary JGO Administrator

FWIW, I raised 2 objections. One of those appears to me to have been dealt with (do I need to explicitly say so?), and the other is out of my hands to verify (presumably this is the one causing trouble).

AFAICS, it’s probably enough just to raise the objection if we ever see this kind of stuff happening, and that should scare off anyone intending to game the system.

Posts 1 and 2 end in multiple exclamation marks. Posts 2 and 3 both use smiley =)
All three posters have submitted a single post only.
The word ‘Intelligence’ is mispelt in the first of the three and is mispelt in the same way by the project proposer:

If it looks like a duck, waddles like a duck & quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.

Maybe only members of a month or more’s standing should be allowed to vote?

Yeah, though I hate to admit it, your analysis of the posts brings up some serious questions.

I think the board needs to decide how we chnage the rules to handle this in a clear and clean manner in the future…

I think we really should make something like only members of a month or longer or with a specified number of posts should be allowed to vote (We’ll only have to be careful that these guys don’t start spamming around to get the number of posts, even if it then would be a good indicator who’s trying to fake things and who is not). I think this should work, because as a requester you can still be new to this forum, but then you are simply not allowed to vote.

Is there also a possibility to check misuse of already requested and approved projects? (e.g. when it’s used as download-location for illegal software…) And would Jeff or someone be able to close those projects? Because we could then in grey areas (like this one) simply observe the project for what it is used and if it gets misused simply close it? Mmh maybe this’ll be simply too much work…

PS: I actually think that our system already works very well. We have recognised that there is something foul with that project request haven’t we? ;D

Not really - the current system was invented to work on a mailing list, not on a forums website, which is why it doesn’t take advantage of things like numposts. I think if you designed something from scratch in 5 minutes now, based upon the assumption that no-one uses the mailing list (which IIRC is why this category is here - most people wer ignoring the mailing list), you could add some other nifty filters like the one you suggested. Maybe even automate it (!).

(IIRC this forums software allows you to make it that only peolpe with certain num posts can vote on a topic, and we could just then have every proposal as a forum-vote)

Thats fine, but as the admin I do need a standard procedure to follow.

If the procedure is to punt anything where an issue arises to the Board thats fine, but then for my comfort I’d like us to specify that

Since I am the only JGO board member left standing, I’ll say "punt anything where an issue arises ", hee.

So punted. I need a call on this project proposal by Friday please.

Yay or Nay?

JK

Boards do log IPs these days. See that funny icon with “Logged” next to it in the lower right corner? Click it and compare

And just because I really like the phrase…

NUKE IT FROM ORBIT!
