I caen’t reed gud!
Anyway yeah back on topic. I don’t care who buys Sun as long as Apple stops sucking so hard on getting me Java 1.6.

If IBM decides not to provide Java under GPL, Linux developers will become really angry >:( (me included).
its already GPL, you can’t put the genie back in the bottle.
Can they relicense new versions? (I’m under the impression you can change the license at the later date it just doesn’t apply to the older work).
Kev
IBM’s license for Java was obtained before the GPL’ed version was released - no reason they wouldn’t continue using that - except that IBM seem fine about open source stuff, as after all, they largely sell services rather than software.

Well, IBM does contribute to Apache Harmony, and then there’s this:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-6134853-7.html
IBM wasn’t too happy about the way it was open-sourced. Of course, Sun can’t please everyone.
If IBM bought Sun, they’d be participating in three Java implementations: the original IBM Java, Sun Java, and Harmony. At that point, I’m sure they’d want to combine efforts somehow.

IBM’s Java is pretty much licensed Sun implementation, with most differences in the JVM.

for starters it is hEckboy
also I didnt think that.
also, I thought it was space odeyssey: 3001(or 2100 cant remember) I could be BSing though, not sure
I know. That’s why I said it was written in 1948. As in nineteen forty-eight. He reversed the last two digits to get the year in which he set it.
h3ckboy, apologies for getting the name wrong. I’ve been misreading it for a couple of months.
Oops! Sorry for being a dick, apparently I’m dyslexic. I’ll go edit out that post because it’s completely due to my brain not reading correctly.
btw, isn’t a heck 100g of weed/pot? Can you give me?
And another question (no offense intended!) how old are you? my guess is 14.
hehe and that’s would be cool if they continue this way :), because IMHO they have big trouble to bring out quality soft as WebSphere / Portal / rational perf test, I used all of those and … what is the workd ? hum… burk…
…don’t forget about EJBs (when compared with Spring).
ahh we all made mistakes along the line ;).
btw, this is beyond off-topic now
Getting back on topic, the New York Times has run another article indicating that this deal is very close to happening, either today (Friday) or early next week: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/03/technology/business-computing/03blue.html?_r=1
JAVA hit $8.40 after hours, up from around $4.70 before the announcement of this deal, so with a reported buyout price of $9.50 a share, the market’s giving this somewhere around a 75% chance of going through.
So we’ll probably find out pretty soon what this will all mean for Java…
Offer’s now been pulled because IBM got annoyed with some of the specifics: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/06/technology/business-computing/06blue.html?_r=1&hp
Sun’s investors could be seriously displeased with this, I’d imagine, especially if the stock craters again tomorrow morning, though IBM could just be doing this to kill off some of the clauses in the deal that they objected to, we’ll see…
The deal’s collapse raises questions about Sun’s next step, since the I.B.M. offer was far above the value of the Silicon Valley company’s shares when news of the I.B.M.
you know why the deal was such a higher price - cause sun is worth more. :
hmm wonder how hard the hit will be anyway time to start buying sun stocks again…
I also love how this whole story is pretty much all coming out of the nytimes from ppl ‘close’ to the talks.
also I’d doubt you can label anyone an ‘investor’ who just rides the train up for a bit.
Yup, talks have collapsed.
IBM-Sun takeover talks ‘collapse’
IBM’s talks to acquire computer hardware maker Sun Microsystems $7bn (£4.7bn) takeover have broken down, media reports say.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7985274.stm
It’s funny that bigger company can either benefit or cause damage to competitor just offering take-over. If smaller company ignores the bigger ones offer then smallers shares drop a lot. Bigger company doesn’ really lose much in both cases. This same thing was with Microsoft and Yahoo.
dont sure I understand the whole story but if sun is bought by IBM I will really consider living Java World… and earth… and finally go living on the moon and return to basic stuff
