??? To each his own. I think in general it looks much better than this forum - except for the quoting - that is lame.
(and of course Jive promotes Java technology)
I thought those java.net forums were so ugly to stop newbs from posting where the Sun team actually pay attention
These forums are much easier on the eyes x100. And the recently re-vamped java.sun forums look like the ugly twin of JGO: http://forum.java.sun.com/forum.jspa?forumID=406.
I got a free web host and Google slapped those stinkin’ text ads at the top of my page. They’re EVERYWHERE! And I can’t get them to ignore me! Much like the cashier at the supermarket who wants you to hear her life’s story.

Agreed 100%, was just mho
Eh? Its not google who put the ads there. Its your oh-so-free hoster.
How do these ads work exactly? Per click or you just get payed for showing them? If you need to do something complicated like click on them and then buy / register to something then I say no. Otherwise yes, I can click few a week.
Adsense uses pay per click and random or content related (optionally filtered) ads. Conetent related ads should work pretty well here.
usaly wehn i go to a site whith google adds there so many i just leave but if its that or jive maby line down the bottom and a line acros the top plus only adds related to jave if you can :’(
harry, the amount of google ads is up to the person who places the ad. notice the ad on my site… http://javaunlimited.net/games/java4k_2006.php (on the left side). see? that’s not bad at all.
you should go sign up for adsense account just so you can see how it works. google doesn’t take control of the site or anything. you can customize these ads yourself… from colors, to horizontal or vertical, to how many ads you want on one panel, how many panels you want, bla bla bla… its entirely up to the ad placer (in this case chris)
Aye
I’ve got some on two of my sites, and they can be discrete. It probably brings in less revenue, but won’t turn people away.
Endolf
Im not gonna vote cause I want this to be you guys decision.
I will comment though that if we do the ads I woudl like to see a line somewher that states, for evreyone to see, that every dime of revenue generated by this site is returned to the communtiy in the form of JGO operating costs, contest prizes, etc.
I actually kind of like the “opt out” idea where there is a theme available thaty is ad free, and when you select it the system reminds you that you are chosing not to contribute to the community funds.
Then its up to the individual.
Go for it. Google text ads are unobtrusive and sometimes I even click for a real look.
tbh I’m getting sick of seeing google adds everywhere. I’m even considering phasing out my gmail account. I just don’t really have a viable alternative
So I’m a ‘no’ considering that over the last 3 or 4 years this has been the site I have most visited (even if I don’t post much) and would like it to stay add free.
While not great Jive didn’t look that bad.
If you do end up going for it then please allow an opt out.
sorry for being negative and selfish.
Dan.
Reality is: TANSTAAFL :
I don’t care for ads on web sites any more than I ads on TV or radio or in my mail. I actively contact mail and phone solicitors to remove me from their lists and pursue reporting them when they violate that. I have given up almost all normal TV viewing or radio listening because of ads. I watch less than 2 hours of TV per week and my car listening is almost exclusively CDs or public radio ( which I DO donate to, btw ). On the web, I use Firefox with blocks for popups, adbloc, flash block, and anything else I can use to reduce ad clutter for most sites I visit.
So I do my best to avoid or eliminate ads, but I generally do so by avoiding the service that pushes them.
HOWEVER, there are a few sites which I really feel provide me with a service I rely on. This is one of them. This is also the only one that is still ad-free. For these few sites I do try to make an effort about once per week or so to do some click-thru on any ads that I find agreeable. If JGO requires ads to remain a free, valuable service for me and others in the community, then I will accept their presence and will exercise them on occassion to help with the revenue.
In a perfect world you would not need to rely on advertisement to provide a service like this. But this is not a perfect world ( at least not until I finish my briliant plan for global take over ).
