Generalized Rant Thread

Doh! My reading comprehension needs some tweaking obviously…I’ll blame it on a lack of coffee…that’s my excuse and I’m stickin’ to it.

Defender methods sounds weird. If we can get defender methods, why not let us extend multiple classes too? I don’t see how adding executable code to interfaces (indirectly at least) is any different.

Hot of the presses: “Joshua Bloch”, much revered Java guru stinks again! Read here: http://googleresearch.blogspot.fr/2006/06/extra-extra-read-all-about-it-nearly.html. (For those of you that haven’t had enough coffee, Boch’s solution is very broken)

(OK, it’s old…but I just remember this when I was typing up stuff of this thread. OK, it would be funny if I screwed it up.).

If you check the bug (or the source), Arrays.binarySearch was fixed in 1.6

I wasted over an hour reading this thread… just to realize the irony in everyone screaming how time is your most precious resource… yet here we all are procrastinating.

A person is only as interesting as their contradictions.

I guess I shouldn’t say wasted, I enjoy talking (reading) about this sorta stuff, it’s always nice to hear (read) what other people experience while programming.

All generalizations are false? Tell that to a class hierarchy.

The self folks did that and look what happened: class-based kids come up with 40-ish lego block to try to pretend it’s not there and prototype-based kids are afraid of the infinite space around them and set about pretending like they’re class-based.

(EDIT: grammar mistake)

Bring back Pop 11 I say!

I’ve kept forgetting to post the graph:

Poorly labeled graph

I give it a 2/5

American Diet guidelines:

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the United States’ largest organization of food and nutrition professionals:

http://www.eatright.org/Media/content.aspx?id=6442474717
It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that the total diet or overall pattern of food eaten is the most important focus of healthy eating. All foods can fit within this pattern, if consumed in moderation with appropriate portion size and combined with physical activity. The Academy strives to communicate healthy eating messages that emphasize a balance of food and beverages within energy needs, rather than any one food or meal.

Funny:

“All foods can fit within this pattern, if consumed in moderation …”

And here their Corporate Sponsors:

CocaCola
Pepsi
Hersheys Chocolade
Kellogs
Unilever
etc…

NomNomNom

I’m sure that is quite correct for ‘appropriate’ portion sizes:
foodstuffappropriate portion size

CocaCola0

Chocolate0

Pizza0
I guess with that table their sponsoring income would suffer…
(Who will educate the children then about “healthy” foods)

Their parents.

That is actually true.
Nutritionists nowadays are brainwashed people who can only say: “EAT MORE FIBERS, DON’T EAT RED MEAT, DON’T EAT PROCESSED FOOD”. Also, they hate the food industry so much that it would disappear if they could make it happen.

Well, some can agree with them, but what they say about stuff like bottled sterile milk? over9000-grain bread? integral/organic morning cereal? They are all processed food, which are also healthy.
Then you have some said “unhealthy” food. Coca-cola? It has a 0 calories version. worried about the sodium? Some fruits have more than an entire bottle. Chocolate? it has a lot of beneficial stuff, but ONLY if you choose poorly, will also have a lot of sugar.

The food industry is not the enemy. It’s the habits.

I don’t know where you guys are from, but the obesity epidemic in America has got way out of hand in where everything is under the target scope. They are forcing calorie labels on all fast food and vending machine entities. There was even some reports stating that sodium and sugar need to be drastically minimized in a proper diet. In all respect to these reporters, I think people should just exhibit a little more self control.

I attribute it to just pure laziness, because it actually takes a bit of effort to live a healthy lifestyle. I think a major part of it is just that people don’t feel responsible for what happens to their own bodies. They believe that if they eat unhealthy one day, that a quick diet can thin them out again. Rinse and repeat.

I had an old teacher that pretty much sums this entire problem up.

“Our bodies have not undergone any massive changes in the last 3000 years. So guess what, the same foods that allowed our ancestors to live a healthy lifestyle, is going to be the same foods that will allow us to live a healthy lifestyle.”

I think we all just need to wise up on our eating habits in general.

I think it’s addiction to food, and modern health care. It’s actually so good, that people expect their bodies to be fixed a decade before the abuse is about to kill 'em.

If we wouldn’t have modern health care, people would think twice about stuffing everything in reach in their mouth. As they’d see everybody around them that did that to die horrible deaths after years of agony, where extremities would be dieing and people going blind due to diabetes or some other obesity related desease. There also wouldn’t be skaters, but that’s another story.

The industry spends BILLIONS, with a B, every year, in trying to ingrain the habits and nutrition policy of nations. If it didn’t work, they wouldn’t spend it.
