Gaming contests for people under 18?

I don’t see why not, if you get enough under 18’s to make it worthwhile. On the other hand it only takes a couple of years to get really good, so the standard won’t be much easier. You could wait 6 months before holding it so ra4king can’t enter of course

As said before, you don’t need approval. Just do whatever you wish.

Why wouldn’t you want ra4king to participate? Sure, he’s all over the place, but I’ve rarely seen him spit out games of such superior quality that nobody on JGO can compare. ::slight_smile:
I would think the more competition the better? Or, are you trying to avoid that by restricting age?

The one-week-game sounds fun.

It’s a nice idea, but somehow age seems so arbitrary to me (I’m 34 by the way, so I’d hate to feel almost 100% too old to participate ;D). People come from different backgrounds, go through different paths in life, and have wildly different talents to start with. I doubt that there is a clear correlation between age and skill in games development (would be interesting thing to research though).

I also say, give it a go. I’m curious about the games that will be made

A discussion upfront to decide on an interesting theme will help I guess.

How about no age restrict for first try? and let’s see the result.

You doubt my skill?! You doubt my power?! You shall pay!!

But in all seriousness, I’ve never actually worked on more than 3-4 games…total. I am too busy with school and learning OpenGL :expressionless:

That was my impression too, which made me say that.

Ditto! I’m studying physics and math, which makes me want to do more programming. Gah.

Now that doesn’t mean that I barely have programming experience! I have coded MANY more non-game things.

I’m not saying that at all either!

A good reason for the age restriction is school.

It puts a huge dent in your available time.

So is anyone really interested, or are you just going to talk about it.

I would be happy to organise such an event here on JGO, if people had a good idea of want they want for each of these:

All of those are fine by me. Agreeing to this is scary though, because I find it hard to tell if I am able to put that time into that game at the time. I don’t want to get crucified for wanting this jam, and then not being able to enter.

EDIT: Please be aware that anyone could be in school. In my country college is free, so people 40+ could still be studying full time.

Most people that aren’t in school have a day job

My thoughts on how it should go:

  1. I think restrictions should be minimal, perhaps just a time limit. It should be your own code (except for graphics libraries of course), no copy-pasta. It should be mostly written during the competition, basic libraries should be allowed though (much like Ludum Dare).
  2. I vote no restriction on theme.
  3. Posting to a thread is probably easiest unless someone wants to throw together a site.
  4. I think anyone on JGO should be able to vote if they want.
  5. Fun, Innovation, Graphics, Audio, Originality

I think a theme should be set. What will make this different than normal game-making, except an accelerated process? Themes are fun. The LD themes tend to add a twist, which I quite enjoy.

Give this a name and ask Riven for a sub-forum here in JGO.

Don’t think this deserves a sub-forum, not yet, until several people want to join. Until then maybe a free website or something.

A “proper” contest takes a lot of administrative power though, and lot’s of work. I think it’d be much faster and easier if we decide some rules and just post our games, like the 40x30 EGA thing back then.

So far:

Restrictions & Rules:

  • 1 Week
  • All content created during the week.
  • Graphics libraries (LWJGL, Slick, LibGDX) are allowed.
  • Personal libraries are allowed as long as they don’t include any code for the actual game (ie: only utilities).
  • Must work by yourself.

Theme:

  • Undecided whether there is a theme or not.
  • Maybe have an optional theme plus a category based on how well the theme was followed.

Submissions:

  • Create a thread in a sub-forum if Riven helps with that.
  • Otherwise, think of alternative options (blog, forum etc.).

Voting:

  • Anyone on JGO can vote.
  • If hosted here, then voting is done by posting your vote in the thread for that game.
  • Vote 0-5 on each category.

Categories:

  • Fun.
  • Innovation.
  • Originality.
  • Graphics.
  • Audio.
  • Theme?

Overall rating by calculating the average of all the categories

@HeroesGraveDev that sounds pretty good to me although i think the one week limit may be too short
also if you would like to help i would be glad to if u wanna talk about it on skype or something

1 week forces you to remove anything unneccessary and to get things done while giving you plenty of opportunities to restart and do something simpler.

So I assume that there are enough people to make this happen.

How about the 11th-17th February? Submissions closed on the 18th to account for time-zone differences. If this time is inconvenient then please say so.

Any suggestions for names?
