I could go through all the hassle of LZMA libs etc
There is a “java_lzma” package :o

The sdk is needed for creating plain lzma files. I just tried it and it seems to work pretty well
Actually Webstart is pretty good. The 1.5 even more.
While it’s a pity Cas won’t / can’t use it for his Super Elvis, this is no reason it should die.
Millions of users all around the world, also many game fans, will find Webstart to do what they need to.
I see it being used in companies who know what Java is and usually they praise it a lot: for example for Intranet business wide applications, etc.
Much talk in this thread falls with the size of the Java app you intend to distribute: the larger it’ll be, the less the JRE size matters at all. So, say, your project features some brillant bitmap textures with a handful of them being larger than the JRE you won’t bother complaining about size. It all depends on the projects of the people and nothing, absolutely nothing, always fits to all people’s needs. So why cry?
Also bear in mind, that SUN’s a company having to care for many customer’s / people’s needs.
To cut a long story short: I think SUN does a good job in total. Java’s a pleasure to use, usually. Where’s light there’s also dark and nothing’s perfect, but in total it’s great.
So… Sun, Java, Webstart: live.
Hehe, I didn’t really mean I wanted Webstart to die Perhaps really I just want the development team to be placed in the stocks and have rotten vegetables hurled at them until they express their deepest regrets.

Oh, I will still be using Webstart for MacOS X and Linux because a) Webstart on the Mac is guaranteed available and works properly and b) I don’t care at all about Linux. And indeed I’ll leave it working for Win32 too, but it’s not going to be the most prominent download link for Windows because it’s far less likely to work.
Unfortunately millions of users around the world is a very tiny percentage of the hundreds of millions of users on the internet.
