Cosmic Trip to be released

hmm, I have absolutely no idea :-[
It used to work on linux before…
IIRC, you are limited in choosing the video on linux as they are kind of ‘fixed’ which is why CT falls back to any video mode it can find. Could you maybe try to set your video mode to either 16 or 32 bits? (I never trust 24 bits for some reason :))

On a Win2k box with and Intel graphics card: Changes mode then just sits there with a black screen. Randomly hit the arrow keys and enter. Got into the game, very jerky (no surprise on this card). Hit escape and the machine locked up, had to pull the power cord.

:’(

any logs?

Not that I can find, sorry.

worked fine on my xp box - however got a black screen first, which I pushed a lot of buttons first - and then it displayed itself. Worked fine, though the mouse movement is a bit oddish/jerky ?

JWS application manager has an option to write a log. I’d hate to ask to crash your machine again though :slight_smile:

Maybe I should add a ‘loading…’ screen.
Dunno about the mouse movement. It’s quite smooth here… What do you mean by ‘oddish’?

Doesn’t work. Here’s the log (Radeon 9700pro, Cat4.2 drivers, Win XP):

In my own LWJGL stuff, i can set 80060032bpp @ 85Hz without a problem.

Well, 24 bit colors are the linux way of saying 32 bits per pixel. I’m suspecting that you draw the menu (or whatever) too close to the near view plane, since the controls seem to work. And depending on z buffer precision the menu might suddenly disappear.

Linux’s got a funny way of saying things :wink:
Let me check z clip thing, although it would surprise me that is in fact the problem. I’ve tested on my work PC with intel video, and I have the same problem with the black screen instead of menu (pressing enter in the black screen puts you in the game), where before I didn’t have any problems.

But can you set 80060032@60 without a problem? It crashes on Display.setDisplayMode(mode).

Did you see the menu?

Thanks for testing guys, it seems it only works fine on my PC and Orangy Tang’s (maybe Matzon’s too, although I’m not very happy with the black screen) which is a pretty embarrassing score.

Back to the drawing board :slight_smile:

It just sat there with a blank black screen - I had to kill the process. I half expected to see an exception reported in the log.

No, i can’t. Maybe that’s because i’m using refresh-force, a tool that forces a fixed refresh-rate (of 85Hz in my case). I’m doing this, because i simply can’t stand the 60Hz flickering many OpenGL games are showing otherwise and this tool was the only thing that worked on my machine.

tryied again, this time no crash so the log doesn’t show anything useful but the menu still doesn’t show up.

@Orangy Tang:
I doubled the sparks :slight_smile:

@EgonOlsen:
On the desktop, there’s a .cosmictrip folder with a config.xml file. You can set the refresh rate from 60 to 85 there. (If there’s also a .config.xml, delete it. It’s from the previous version and doesn’t have the //video/refresh tag). There will be a GUI for that at startup.

@zparticle, swpalmer, elias, matzon:
I moved the near clipping pane a bit closer in a vague attempt to solve the black screen problem (the menu was draw exactly on the near clipping pane, although the overlays do not do any depth testing).
You could also try pressing return after a few secs of black screen (maybe after a mouse click for focus which seems somtimes to be necessary with jws). It should enter the game then.

Ona little bit different note, EricD, the demo you let me see a few weeks ago looks great. I am keen to show whatever you have have on a demo pod in our booth at GDC and point people to your site.

Very cool and quite addictive :slight_smile:

I’ve deleted the JWS cache and downloaded the whole stuff again. Now i have a config.xml-file in that directory and i changed the refresh-rate to 85. But it still gives me the same error. It still tries to set 800*600@60Hz and exits… :’(

That’s strange :-[ It works here by just changing the refresh tag in the config.xml.
The latest version also has a bit more logging. Could you post the log again?

Nope still blank & black.

Though the webstart log now has the OGL capabilities:
